This accomplished first offering from James Mckenzie gets my vote. It is a well written story about an unlikely group who go in search of Yamashita's gold. While being swept along with the story I could feel that there was an underlying spiritual side to the novel which did become apparent at the end. I was introduced to the aswang, a type of ghost/vampire whose exploits left me in a cold sweat. Loosley based on the fabled Yamashita's gold, this story serves up helpings of delicious madcap action along with some very spooky moments. The author's descriptive powers left me feeling as if I had taken the journey with them and experienced the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong and the quiet serenity of the Philippine jungle. A must read for those who love fantasy/action/thrillers.
