Let me start this by putting my chips on the table. I love n + 1. I¿ve only read issues four and five, but I am absolutely enamored. n + 1 for the uninitiated, is a twice-yearly journal of literature, culture, and politics. They also post frequently on their website, which now has a feed as well.Somehow, this letter speaks to why I love n+1 so very much: "It¿s one of those strange intellectual coincidences. We chose n+1 as the working title of our journal. For us it was a metaphor for the posibility of progress, the infinitely open set, at a time when Americans seemed to have lost faith both in progressive politics and the possibility of individual improvement, in literature and thought, without the aid of capitalism¿ We hoped the world would be big enough for both n+1s: yours dialectical and Marxist, ours progressive and eclectic, both united in a belief that we deserve better than what our governments and culture presently offer."What is unique, I think, about n+1 is that while they are dissatisfied with the state of things, the magazine is incredibly idealistic and hopeful. It stands apart from Mother Jones and Adbusters as a critique of culture because it is like the disappointed parent, lovingly saying, ¿We know you can do better than that, son.¿Beyond that the writing is square on. Every word is deliciously insightful and the intellectual scene is more entertaining than you though a column of culture could be. Just go get a copy already.
