CHAPTER 1
All the animals on Cloonie's farm expected Nanny Goat to help them whenever they needed help. You see, Nanny Goat could do things the other animals could not do. It was widely believed that she was in very good physical condition. But as time went by, an unwanted change took place in her appearance.
Nanny Goat passed by Henrietta Hen who was fluttering upward to ring a bell.
"Cluck, CLUCK!" complained Henrietta. "Help me, Nanny Goat. My wing hurts, and I'm not able to reach the bell. I'm hungry and need my lunch. Would you do it? Farmer Cloonie will hear the bell and feed me."
Nanny Goat was happily chomping on a bag of greasy French fries. She said, "Naa, naa. Whatever would you do if I wasn't here? But since I can jump as high as the sky, I'll do it."
Nanny Goat stood under the bell. "This is too easy," she boasted. "My legs are like springs." But when she jumped, she jumped only half way to the bell.
"Oh dear," clucked Henrietta gloomily. "You missed. Try again."
"I must have misjudged the height," said Nanny Goat. "No problem. Naa, naa. I'll do it this time."
So Nanny Goat tried again ... and again ... and again. Not once did her nose get close enough to ring the bell.
"Your face seems to be just a little bit rounder than it used to be," said Henrietta. "That's too high to jump if you've chunked up."
"Chunked up?" said Nanny Goat rudely. "Naa, NAA! Never! I'm as slim as a fence post. Besides, it's easy to see that Farmer Cloonie raised the bell."
Annoyed, Nanny Goat began to stuff the greasy fries into her mouth and walked away. For the longest time you could hear her crunching and munching. She even ate the bag. She really loved to eat lots of unhealthy food.
One week later Nanny Goat passed by Claudette Cow who was standing near a fence. She was trying to stick her head through a small opening.
"Moo, MOO!" moaned Claudette. "Help me, Nanny Goat. I kicked my ball over the fence. Would you crawl through and get it for me?"
Nanny Goat was smacking her lips while enjoying two slices of gooey cheese pizza. She said, "Naa, naa. Whatever would you do if I wasn't here? But since my body is so slim, I'll do it."
Nanny Goat walked over to the fence. "This is too easy," she boasted. "I'll get your ball as quick as a wink." But when she tried, she became stuck half way through the opening.
"Oh dear," mooed Claudette. "You seem to be stuck."
"I must have misjudged the width," said Nanny Goat as she wiggled and squeezed out of the fence. "No problem. Naa, naa. I'll just try another angle and I'll get through."
So Nanny Goat turned and tried a different angle ... and tried again ... and again. Unfortunately, she became stuck again.
"Your face and tummy seem to be just a little bit plumper than they used to be," said Claudette. "That's too small an opening if you've chunked up."
"Chunked up?" said Nanny Goat rudely. "Naa, NAA! Never! I'm as slim as a pencil. Besides, it's easy to see this is not the same spot I usually crawl through."
Annoyed, Nanny Goat began to wolf down her gooey cheese pizza and walked away. For the longest time you could hear her gobbling and gorging. She even ate the napkin. She indeed was gaining weight.
One week later Nanny Goat passed by Dilbert Duck who was trying to open a barn door.
"Quack, QUACK!" fussed Dilbert. "Help me, Nanny Goat. I can't get into the barn because the door is stuck. Would you ram it open?"
