Lynn's biography of Napoleon delivers a well balanced view of the his political, personal, military, and sexual life. Lynn criticizes and empathizes with the complex person of Napoleon. I definetly reccommend the book for Napoleon enthusiasts and the general reader who wants only to own a single volume of the great military leader in their collection. Lynn, however, draws heavily upon psychoanalytic theory to explain Napoleon's 'unconscious motivations'. If you are a little rusty on your Freud & Adler, you may find yourself lost in a few paragraphs of the book, but this hardly spoils the read!

This was a valuable tool for a research paper on Napoleon. I felt that all the major episodes in Napoleon's time in and out of power were presented with great depth.

Frank McLynn's biography of Napoleon covers more material than Markham's and is more readable than Ludwig's. Perfectly designed for the modern reader the book outlines Napoleon's life far better than any I have read. McLynn presents Napoleon as a sympathetic man on a personal level yet cold and harsh in the abstract. McLynn is quickly becoming my favorite historian.

Often academics who posess a wealth of information on a certain topic can overwhelm the curious reader with minuate detail and over analysis of the subject matter. Heaven knows that the life of Napolean has been researched by an army of historians and others. I find that this author has been able to draw on the works of this army of researchers and put together a very fine book that reads well and holds the interest of an amatuer history buff such as myself. We are brought right into the late 18th and early 19th centuries and are able to get a feel for the times as Nepolean proceeded to impose his will throughout Europe. One learns not only what he accomplished, but also what drove this man. A fine read. I highly recommend this book.
