Naruto Super Hits 2006-2008

With a rotation of themes between seasons, many Japanese television shows become breeding grounds for up-and-coming bands, giving many a shot at popularity through the yearly changing of styles and songs. Between 2006 and 2008, that meant 12 different themes for the show Naruto. The themes represented on Super Hits range from more traditional pop music to contemporary rock-rap fusions. There tends to be a basic dichotomy from song to song -- opening themes are energetic, high-impact pieces (case in point: Nobody Knows' "Hero's Come Back") while ending themes are more sentimental, lower-tempo pieces (case in point: Home Made Kazoku's "Shooting Star") are often paired up with one another in their essentially chronological presentation. On the higher-energy pieces, there's a tendency toward the thrashing, the clashing, as in a contemporary ska piece from Long Shot Party that sounds as though the members never quite hit the same time signature. This is generally deliberate, showing more energy than skill, and matching themes within the show. The album charted well, driven the by popularity of its associated series, and fans should enjoy having the full and original versions of the various songs. For those not so interested in the show, the album provides a showcase of contemporary groups without a huge amount of chart success or exposure individually, but gives them their best shot at winning hearts and minds, with many hitting a good note.
