Am new "birder" - reviewed several books but found this one to be the most comprehensive and set up for my needs. It was also recommended by our local Audubon Society members.

This is an outstanding guide for birders of all levels. The artwork is outstanding with beautiful colors and poses which highlight the most important features of the bird for identification purposes. There are useful comparisons of similar birds. The layout and design have been refined to near perfection in the sixth edition. The bird descriptions provide excellent detail, the maps are clear and easy to understand. The book is the right size to allow easy manipulation and reading in the field but with a weight that is easily mangaged during a dawn to dusk foray. I wish it was available in a Nook edition as well.

This guide's comprehensiveness is also its biggest flaw, I had an earlier edition that was slightly smaller. Because of that the species on the plates were crowded together. That has been corrected. However, the fact the authors felt the necessity to include every species ever recorded in NA, even the Aleutian islands, might make this confusing for beginners. James Coe's out of print Birds of Eastern North America is a model for a beginner's guide. All The Birds of North America, also out of print, solved the problem by downsizing rare birds and and placing them above common species. If you are looking for more species info, the Geographic Complete Birds of North America is a fine supplement to this guide.
