Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
People come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. This board book from the "National Geographic Society Little Kids Look & Learn" series helps introduce babies and young toddlers to the variety of human physical form. Colorful pages feature photographs showing girls, boys, women, men, and babies. The book is interactive; a picture shows a line of several girls, and then readers are asked to pick the girls out of a scene. This learning strategy repeats for boys, women, men, and babies, culminating in a family party picture in which readers are asked to identify each. In this way, the book builds and reinforces upon learning. Short, fun facts are interspersed throughout the book to add interest. While the book centers on Americans, people with differing ethnic backgrounds, clothing, postures, and ages are well-represented. For example, girls here aren't necessarily shown wearing dresses or having long hair. However, because of the great variety, it is sometimes difficult for even older readers to distinguish boys from girls, adding a bit of needless confusion. There is some need for explanation of visual clues as this book is read aloud, and this may inevitably lead to the larger conversation of how boys and girls are different. Still, the board book offers an engaging, colorful twist on the identification books that pointing babies love to read. Reviewer: Jennifer Greene
