Overview

Indians of North America presents accurate portrayals of the history and culture of North American Indian peoples in volumes written specifically for young adults.Based on the most recent scholarship and written by authorities on the subject, each of the volumes in this highly acclaimed series provides a balanced account of the history of relations between Indians and whites and challenges many still-prevalent myths and stereotypes. The volumes also examine the Native American past before European contact--chapters in the history of Indian peoples that are often overlooked.

Gr 6 UpDramer's effort is framed by the African-American experience, rather than the Native American, which is a real anomaly for this series. Topics include Crispus Attucks, the relationship between escaped slaves and the Native peoples of the southeast who gave them shelter, slavery of blacks by the Five Civilized Tribes, black cowboys and scouts, Indian involvement on both sides of the Civil War, the status of black Indians under both tribal and federal law, and biographical sketches of several notable African Americans of the late 19th centurybut no Indian leaders. Black-and-white photographs add little information, but provide some visual support. Libraries that own William Katz's Black Indians (Atheneum, 1986) can skip Dramer's book.Lisa Mitten, University of Pittsburgh, PA
