Description: This book, organized by diagnosis, describes imaging and pertinent clinical findings for a variety of spinal pathologic conditions.
Purpose: It is intended as an introductory guide for physicians striving to enhance their clinical skills in treating patients with various spinal diseases, with a focus on interpretation of imaging studies and correlation with clinical history and physical findings. The objectives are worthy, since introductory level textbooks focused on imaging are lacking in this field. The authors have done an excellent job in meeting these objectives.
Audience: Although the author is not specific about the audience, the book is written at such a level that it will be useful for practitioners seeking introductory level information regarding treatment of spinal pathology, and it will be especially useful for residents and medical students. Physiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, family practice, and internal medicine physicians will find it to be a pertinent clinical reference. The contributing authors represent physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, and orthopedic surgery.
Features: The book is well organized into diagnosis-based chapters describing clinical and imaging findings of various spinal pathologies. The introductory chapters provide detailed yet concise descriptions of spinal anatomy and imaging modalities and include summaries of advantages and disadvantages of each modality. The subsequent chapters cover conditions ranging from disc disorders and spinal stenosis to neoplastic disease and vascular disorders. Each chapter describes diagnoses by clinical presentation and imaging findings, including x-ray, CT, and MRI. Very clear examples of imaging findings are provided and illustrations provide excellent schematic representations. Tables are used to help compare and differentiate similar conditions.
Assessment: This is a high quality textbook that should prove to be a useful introductory reference for physicians seeking to improve their knowledge of the radiologic and clinical findings of a broad array of spinal pathology.
