Navy SEAL Sniper: An Intimate Look at the Sniper of the 21st Century by Glen Doherty, Brandon Webb

Navy SEAL Sniper is a revised, updated, and full-color edition of The 21st-Century Sniper.

The sniper is a battlefield threat second to none. Mastering the art of marksmanship is critical but is only part of what makes a Navy SEAL sniper. The modern sniper follows in the long line of warriors that have time and again faced the enemy alone. Snipers must be able to apply the craft in an urban environment or alone on a hostile mountain top with equal effectiveness. Today's sniper has to not just leverage technological advances but have the foreknowledge to select the best rifle and gear for the mission. Increasingly, he must have the mental toughness to adapt to a constantly changing environment, gather intelligence, and truly act as a force multiplier.

In this in-depth look through the eyes of former Navy SEAL sniper instructor Brandon Webb and fellow Navy SEAL sniper Glen Doherty, the authors reveal the fundamentals of not just marksmanship, but the science of shooting, stalking, and camouflage, and how technological advances have changed the training and increased the effectiveness of the modern sniper. Including maritime, helicopter, and urban sniper operations, this updated edition also goes into detail on the latest research, development, testing, and evaluation of weapons and optics. From the basics like compensating for wind and bullet drop, to camouflage and placing yourself or your team in the best position to take a photo or pull a trigger, Webb and Doherty cover the critical elements that comprise the twenty-first century sniper.

About the Author

Glen Doherty (1970–2012) was a combat-decorated SEAL who served in the U.S. Navy for nine years. He worked extensively as an independent security specialist throughout some of the most dangerous places on the planet, all in support of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Glen was KIA in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012, when his team came to the rescue of the U.S. Ambassador and State Department personnel after their safe house was attacked by an overwhelming force and under intense fire. Glen believed in working hard and playing harder; before giving up his life, he was frequently found skiing in Utah or surfing at his home break in Encinitas, California.

Brandon Webb is a former combat decorated U.S. Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer. He served combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. His last tour of duty was as the Naval Special Warfare Sniper Course Manager, the same course that graduated Marcus Luttrell and Chris Kyle, where he graduated over three hundred SEAL sniper students. Glen and Brandon served together at SEAL Team 3 and trained together in the SEAL sniper program, where they became lifelong friends. Brandon is author of the New York Times bestseller The Red Circle. He lives in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where he runs and continues to write.

SEAL Team 3 Chief Chris Kyle (1974–2013), author of the New York Times bestseller American Sniper, served four combat tours in Iraq and elsewhere. For his bravery in battle, he was awarded two Silver Stars, five Bronze Stars with Valor, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and one Navy and Marine Corps Commendation. Following his combat deployments, he became chief instructor for training Naval Special Warfare Sniper and Counter-Sniper teams, and he authored the Naval Special Warfare Sniper Doctrine, the first Navy SEAL sniper manual. A native Texan, he devoted much of his spare time to helping disabled veterans. Chief Kyle is survived by his wife and their two children.

This book is brimming with fascinating information about the sniper's art. It includes a comprehensive overview of snipers throughout history and their evolving role in combat. But the crux of the book is it's detailed descriptions of sniper rifle technology and how new advances in firearm manufacturing have increased accuracy. The book is printed on high-quality glossy stock, which makes the many photos, diagrams, and drawings look particularly beautiful. Though clearly not the work of professional writers (the sometimes clumsy prose is the one thing keeping this book from a five-star review), the authors obviously know what they're talking about from years of training and service and bring a wealth of experience to their of craft. This new edition was published after Glen Doherty's death in Benghazi, and includes moving tributes by Webb and Kyle to a man who's selfless sacrifice for his country will not soon be forgotten.
