NE Vs NC
Redemption Records strikes while it's hot with this two-disc set representing a pair of the better rock scenes to strike it big in 2002. While North Carolina and Nebraska may not be the first places to spring to mind when thinking about revolutionary rock, these two indie hotbeds prove to have a lot going for them, and the double-CD collection of known and not-so-known artists is a solid briefing on just what to be looking out for. Obvious standouts are the Saddle Creek Records artists who have been the brightest stars to come out of Nebraska, but along with Desaparecidos and the Good Life, there are some other strong talents in town, including the ferocious rockers Her Flyaway Manner and the expansively melodic Fizzle Like a Flood. North Carolina makes an equally strong showing, proving that in the wake of the mid-'90s Chapel Hill rock explosion, there is still plenty left to sing about, albeit in a heftier and more aggressive manner than their forefathers may have ever imagined. Strong cuts from Sorry About Dresden, Disband, the Scaries, and Kudzu Wish are at the top of the class, but there really aren't any artists included who didn't deserve to make the cut. Give the record a listen and keep a look out, because this might be the first you hear from a few artists who are going to go quite a long way.
