Nearly Departed by Max Patrick Schlienger

Con artists are a notoriously skeptical bunch, and Dennis Gufehautt is no exception. His scheme of masquerading as a paranormal investigator seems foolproof, until he encounters an actual ghost haunting an antique armchair.

Now, having unwittingly become a witness to a decades-old murder, Dennis finds himself stumbling headfirst into bizarre and often hilarious situations as he tries to solve a legitimate paranormal mystery.

Pursued by an overzealous private detective and driven to befriend a cast of memorable characters – from a perpetually-smoking matron to a charismatic charlatan who masquerades as an African shaman – Dennis works to exorcise the haunted furniture and return his life to a state of moderate normality.

Easier said than done.

About the Author

Since he first learned to speak, Max Patrick Schlienger has been telling stories. Unfortunately, despite having been given ample opportunity and encouragement, he has yet to master the art of shutting the hell up. In an effort to avoid being completely shunned by his friends and family, Max finally took to writing his stories down. He intends to continue in the glamorous profession of making stuff up until such time as the position of Superman becomes available. When he's not wasting time on the Internet or pretending to understand elements of theoretical physics, Max can often be found making short films, singing acappella music, and participating in ill-conceived culinary experimentation. He lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he attempts to maintain a facade of being a functioning adult. There is no currently existing evidence to refute Max's claims of his own immortality, insofar as he is not yet dead.

This was exactly the sort of book I was looking for. I loved it! It had great, well rounded characters that I could really care about. It also had a juicy mystery, several moments of suspense, humor, and a real ghost! The book's engrossing mystery plot left enough clues that I could start to work things out throughout the story. Yet it still kept me guessing until I thought I had all the pieces of the puzzle, a bit before the main characters did. That was a tense moment, as I wanted to jump in the story and yell at the characters with what I knew, only to find out that there was still more nail-biting worry and suspense to come. I won't spoil things, but I highly recommend this novel. It was great from beginning to end. I was only disappointed that there wasn't another novel from Max Patrick Schlienger that I could purchase.

I really enjoyed this book. Some of the characters are very funny, while others are dark and mysterious. It is a very fast read, even though there are over 550 pages. I would definitely recommend this book!

Very entertaining, and there were many twists to the story, which i enjoyed. There was some humor in the story too, which made it all the better.

A fun story about a couple of guys who get involved in something much more than a ghost story. Check it out, it's a fun read. It has some minor language and sexual innuendo so probably more appropriate for ages 14+ or so.
