A boy (Jonathan Anthony Burkett) is living a life in hell. And the shocking aspect is that hell is his mother's arms. Jonathan spends his early childhood with his grandparents and been well taken care of. But, he was sent to his mother with the expectation that his mother is the best in loving him. The boy's life completely falls apart when he stays with his mom. She is downright cruel. The reason was said that his mother was being raped by Jonathan's father and she hates the child because of that. Will Jonathan ever escape his 'evil' mother (I don't have any word to a woman who treats a child like that) or find mother's love which is spoken so highly of? Its a memoir, so nothing I can complain about the plot or the characters. 'Life happens!' is all I can say. But the writing is okay type - not so good and not so bad. I was put off by the start of the novel especially. It was not so captivating and I seriously doubt whether it will lure the readers if they get the sample to read. It started with a bad situation and I thought this book might be disturbing. Well, I read fantasy and zombie themed books a lot, so this comment is not for me, but for other readers. And there is some poetry in between. Also, there is a slang in the novel, that I am not comfortable with. The memoir somehow ended in a satisfying way and I am happy about it. If the writing is made some changes, maybe this book will draw some readers.

Neglected But Undefeated begins with a shocking chapter. Jonathan is beaten mercilessly by his mother multiple times. He grows to hate her, vacillating between thoughts of killing her or killing himself. In the end he is just a child and is unable to do anything. This is just one day in his life, which has gotten progressively more horrible after his earlier years spend with his loving grandparents. His mother refuses to show him kindness or nurturing love at all, confusing Jonathan for a man he has never even met. This book chronicles Jonathan's life and the various turning points in his development as he struggles to grow into a young man without a caring mother to turn to. This book reminds me of "A Child Called It." Both books are very hard to read at points, and I would get to upset I had to take a breather. Still, issues of child abuse need to be brought to the forefront and need to be heard about, discussed, etc. Stories like these are important. This book also reveals a lot of cultural details from the areas Jonathan grew up in, namely Jamaica. I found it doubly interesting due to these details. The book is written using very simple, direct English. This is likely the rough style of the author. Some people would probably like a story that has more embellishments, but I don't mind it that much. Some of the dialogue and descriptions do sound wooden, but I'd prefer to hear stories like these in the writer's own words. This memoir isn't for the faint of heart. It's very raw and emotional.

Neglected But Undefeated, written by Jonathan Anthony Burkett, is a story of the pain, suffering, faith and perseverance of the author who is raised in an extremely abusive household. It’s difficult to read about a little boy who endures years of abuse and hate at the hands of his biological mother who blames him for what his real father did to her and decides to take it all out on their son. Ensconced in a culture where the males must prove their masculinity at a very early age, Jonathan lives a life very different from what I’m used to seeing. When he is sent by his grandparents to live with his mother and stepfather in America his life becomes one of starvation, hours of beatings and nights spent fending for himself on the streets after his mother repeatedly kicks him out of the house. Add to his problems sever and unexplainable seizures and his story is guaranteed to break your heart. It is a gripping read and the author’s honesty is what makes the story so captivating. By the end of it I was just thankful that he is still alive and willing to share it with the world.

Neglected but Undefeated, by Jonathan Anthony Burkett, is the story of the author's childhood in which he grows up being abused.  Jonathan is abused verbally, mentally and physically in such a manner and so harshly that he even sometimes went into seizures that put him into the hospital for days at a time.  It's an extremely hard book to read due to the shock factor alone.  After one of Jonathan's visits to the hospital, his mother is investigated, which lands in her jail for child abuse.  Jonathan's grandparents take him, and it is through them that Jonathan begins going to church and finds his religion.        The book itself was pretty good.  It is definitely not for the faint of heart.  Some of the scenes and descriptions are pretty harsh when he is describing the things that his mother would say or do to him.  But for those with the strength to handle situations on this level, it is a read that is well worth it.  Great job to the author!

Let me first start off by saying it takes a lot for a person to relive their past, especially a past like the one in the book, but it takes even more for that person to be brave enough to write it down and give it to the world to read. Growing up in a household and an environment filled with love and familiar faces and quickly taken away from that environment and having to grow up in a household full of uncertainties. A household where one would expect nothing but love and nurture, is a house that has anything but. Growing up in a house where you feel like the outside, where beatings are something you expect on a daily basis regardless if your good or bad. Not only were there brutal beatings given out daily to a child, there was also verbal abuse as well as neglect in many forms, medical and food neglect. Jonathan goes through so much at an early age that he cant even understand whats going on. There are incidents that happen to him in school with older people, there are things that he witnesses when he is growing up in Jamaica that no child should see, that also effects his life when he moves to Miami to be with his mother. Due to her past that she doesn't share she takes much of her fustrations out on her son because she sees him as someone else. All Jonathan ever really wants is the love of his mother and to feel welcomed by her. How can a boy who grows up going through brutal beatings, verbal abuse, a mother who was a monster still have a positive side and willingness to overcome everything that he had been through. I enjoyed this book. It was a very powerful and touching story that I think people growing up in care, or growing up in the same situations can relate to. When you read this you just cant help to feel your emotions rise with the story, the way this young boy had to grow up being beaten everyday and scared to tell the truth and let people know what was going on or fear of being killed was really sad. There were parts in the story were I was hoping and wishing that he would tell anyone someone just tell the truth about what was going on with him because the way he was getting beat and treated, no food, holes in his shoes, in a way he loves his mother that he didnt want to see her get taken away. As he got older and realized things wouldnt change but since his family dynamics did he just did what he had to do to survive out there. At least there were people around him who suspecting something and were willing to give him a helping hand when they could. The story did have a few minor errors here and there but not a whole lot and also I felt some parts kind of repeated somewhat. Overall a really good book, its sad that anyone had to grow up going through these things, but its great to have so much love in you that you want to give that love and can take that and move forward with your life thats a really strong person. I have recommended this book to a few people, it is a strong subject matter but the lesson of neglected but undefeated is an amazing one. **Nook Readers**

An overwhelming flood of raw emotion   Jonathan Burkett’s journey through life is not typical in any way but he stepped out of the shadows into the age of an adult male with a gift more valuable than any other. Jonathan’s story is one of basic survival as he maneuvered through his younger years and teenage years. Living with an abusive mother who didn’t care if he lived or died kept him on edge, ever fearful of what the new day would bring…beatings, no food, both? As you can imagine he eventually fell in with the wrong crowd, found trouble at every turn, and slept many nights on the streets. After reading “Neglected But Undefeated” it is very easy to see just how close Jonathan came to becoming a horrible statistic…but he did not, her persevered.   Read his own words, feel the emotion Jonathan poured onto each page. Experience his story in every detail. Your anger swells as you picture the abuse he endured only to give way to deep sadness as he continues to struggle in life. But there is a moment, there is a point when the glimmer of hope starts to flash and the heart beats faster as one small victory builds into another and another. This is the journey the readers take. Mingled within we see a private viewing of Jonathan’s heart and mind as he pens poetry to elicit the strength of his emotions at that point in his life. “Neglected But Undefeated” has a message of hope and inspiration within the darkness of cruelty and pain. Yes it is a story of survival but it is also a story of redemption, salvation, and forgiveness for both the author and those closest to him. In the end, we see the closure found and perhaps the closure that still needs to happen.   I recommend “Neglected but Undefeated” to those coping with abuse, depression, hopelessness, and loneliness. I also recommend it to those who have loved ones in need of help. It only takes one person to be an anchor and show the way to a better, more meaningful life.

Touching story that will make think of your loved ones and ask yourself so many questions about why would a mother neglect and treat her child so bad.
