Tired of memoirs that only tell you what really happened?
Sick of deeply personal accounts written in the first person? Seeking an exciting, interactive read that puts the “u” back in “aUtobiography”? Then look no further than Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography! In this revolutionary, Joycean experiment in light celebrity narrative, actor/personality/carbon-based-life-form Neil Patrick Harris lets you, the reader, live his life. You will be born to New Mexico. You will get your big break at an acting camp. You will get into a bizarre confrontation outside a nightclub with actor Scott Caan. Even better, at each critical juncture of your life you will choose how to proceed. You will decide whether to try out for Doogie Howser, M.D. You will decide whether to spend years struggling with your sexuality. You will decide what kind of caviar you want to eat on board Elton John’s yacht.

Choose correctly and you’ll find fame, fortune, and true love. Choose incorrectly and you’ll find misery, heartbreak, and a hideous death by piranhas. All this, plus magic tricks, cocktail recipes, embarrassing pictures from your time as a child actor, and even a closing song. Yes, if you buy one book this year, congratulations on being above the American average, and make that book Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography!

I loved this autobiography. It's not what I usually read, but since it is Neil Patrick Harris, whom I adore, I bought it. I read it all in one afternoon/evening because I could not put it down.

I seldom read biographical material (THREE YEARS AMONG THE COMANCHES being the other ), but Harris wrote of some compelling experiences. The writing style moved along quickly. A more-than-moderate worthwile read.

Leave it to Neil Patrick Harris to write such an entertaining autobiography. The back-and-forth technique is a lot of fun for the reader although it is a little confusing until one gets used to the this approach. Despite the fact that Mr. Harris has been so much in the news throughout his life, it is amazing that he presents so many new and interesting facts.

Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography is a really entertaining book. NPH has lead a remarkable life. In his autobiography he takes you from being a child star to being a has been to reinventing himself and rising to fame again. Along the way he discovers he is gay and comes out. Its an excellent book told in a very entertaining way.

I loved to read Choose Your Own books so this was fun but I also loved the story. Neil talks about his life and what makes him an amazing man.

My middle school aged son is required to read at least one biography each trimester. This can be a chore sometimes. He loved this one! It had humorous stories and hidden pages, and even a couple of card/math tricks. The "choose your own" style was a new concept to him, but I remember those books from my youth. So much fun to read, my other son picked it up as soon as the first was finished with it.

Funny, a good read. I could have done without the chapters that were magic tricks, but there were only a few of those.

Well - this was fun. I wasn't sure how the audio book version of a 'choose your own adventure' biography would turn out, but what the book lacks by not being able to skip around while reading it, is more than made up for by listening to the author tell his own story. If you are a fan of Neil Patrick Harris, you will want to hear him narrate his biography. ...Or should I say "your" biography - since it is written in second person? I've really enjoyed Harris' work on television (that I've seen ... I'm not a nerdy follower bent on watching everything he's ever been in) - first as Doogie Houser, then as Barney Stinson, though it was probably his quick turn as Dr. Horrible that made me appreciate him. But what did I know about Harris (other than that he came 'out' publicly some time ago)? Not much, really. Harris doesn't seem to hold back (though how would we know?) and is pretty forth-coming with his success and his struggles as well as his early journeys into sex and drugs. Really, this is pretty much what you expect to read when you read a biography. One of the things that struck me is how important is was for him to have very VERY supportive parents. It's quite likely that his career would never have gotten off the ground without parents who were willing to go the extra mile to help him succeed in something he had a talent and a passion for. Near the end of the book, I did feel that Harris fell a little into the name-dropping category. While he tried to remind us that he's just an average guy and how lucky he is to rub elbows with the rich and famous, most of us can't even imagine what it would be like to hang out at Elton John's vacation villa, while it's become almost a regular aspect of Harris' life. Sorry Neil ... you are no longer just an average guy who acts. You are now among the elite, living a life the rest of us will never fully appreciate or comprehend. One of the things I learned about Harris, that I found quite interesting, was his interest in magic and his work with The Magic Castle. I enjoyed this book, and listening to Harris tell it was definitely a lot of fun. I'm not usually one for actor biographies, but I was looking for a some driving listening material and this available through my local library. Looking for a good book? Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography is a fun way to read about this actor's life and feels really apropos, and listening to the audio version is a lot of fun.

This book brings back a lot of fond memories for me. I used to adore reading the choose your own adventure books as a child although I would never choose the right option and always ended up dying of thirst or some other horrible death. I would eventually give up on my ability to make the right choices and try to figure out what I needed to choose by working backwards in the book. Despite my poor decision making skills, I never gave up on these books. Every time I brought home a Scholastic flyer from school, I would end up picking out another one of those books. I am the same age as Mr. Harris so it makes some sense that he would fondly remember these books as well as I do and I just love the fact that he used this approach in this book. There is just something about Neil Patrick Harris that seems to be almost universally appealing. I am not a biography reader. I probably read a few back in high school and college because I had to but I can't think of a time where I picked one up to read for entertainment as an adult....but I wanted to read this book as soon as I heard about it. I am not exactly sure what I find so entertaining about Mr. Harris. Sure I have watched and enjoyed some of his work. His portrayal of Barney Stinsen is...wait for it....legendary. I loved him in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. I just have never considered myself to be a huge fan though. If he is on, I'll certainly watch him but I don't go out of my way to be sure to catch him either. I still knew that I had to read this book because there is just something about the way that he tells a story. One thing that I think is genius about this book is the fact that I will certainly be picking it up quite a few more times. It is a choose your own adventure so you have to read it several times just to make sure that you have read every option available. This is a book that I recommend reading as intended with all of the jumping around and choices because it just makes it so much fun. I have been through quite a few options so far with a few ending in a less than ideal manner. I don't think that the book would be nearly as appealing if it were to be read cover to cover. Neil Patrick Harris does have an interesting story to tell. He is a child star that I will always think of as Doogie to some extent. He also talks about his sexuality, his family, and all the things that make him who he is. Some of the parts in the book are simply silly and I liked those just as much as anything else. The book itself looks wonderful. I just love the cover and the section in the center of the book filled with photos is nice to have. I would recommend this book to others. It is witty, funny, touching, and sometimes thought provoking. Plus it is just a lot of fun! This is the first book by Neil Patrick Harris that I have read but I look forward to see what kind of original spin he might apply to a novel in the future. I received a copy of this book from Blogging for Books for the purpose of providing an honest review.

Choose Your Own Autobiography is one of the most creative autobiographies I have ever read or even heard of. We are welcomed into the life of actor Neil Patrick Harris best known for his acting roles as a young doctor named Doogie Howser M.D. or the womanizing Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. Like the Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 1980’s we get to decide how the stories (or in this case NPH’s life) unfold. First off, I am a big fan of Neil Patrick Harris. There is something about him that makes it hard to not like him. This memoir really showcases his sense of humor not just because you get to choose what happens. As I continued to read I felt more and more like I was listening to an old friend chat about his life. Which so far has been pretty awesome. While the Choose Your Own theme was an awesome idea. I had a hard time going back to past pages after meeting an early end. It just became tedious reading what I had already read. Here’s to hoping that Neil Patrick Harris still has a long career in entertainment because I would like to see another book from him.

The promotional sentence says it all.....Tired of memoirs that only tell you what really happened? NO, the ONLY point of a memoir is to provide information, not produce page after page of fantasy, fiction and junk. What an incredibly tedious and annoying book. Wish I had not spent my time to read it. Could have picked up all the pertinent information, online in about 15 minutes!

I was expecting more, being some on who has enjoyed NH on his shows, hosting, interviews, etc. I blame my Nook more than his writing. It made the choose your own adventure format clunky and awkward.
