Nellie Wallace is a young widow with two children. In post civil-war New York, the men are scarce and none want the burden of a wife with children. Her dead husband's family is wealthy, and cruel. Desperate to escape their influence, and eager for a home, a husband, and a stable life for her children, Nellie decides to make a new life in San Francisco as a mail order bride.

Saloon owner Blake Malone is a bachelor and likes it that way. He worked hard for everything he has, but the San Francisco City Council won't approve his plans to build a family emporium unless he is a family man himself. The solution? A mail order bride from New York who will bring him a ready-made family, stability, and the council's approval.

Blake expects his future wife to care for his home and, other than helping him impress the city council, to stay out of his business. He expects life as usual. What he gets is an unexpected desire to win Nellie's heart, a dangerous threat to his new bride, and a rich benefactor determined to steal his new family out from under him. Blake believed his battle for success a hard one. But he will discover that the battle to win Nellie's heart and keep his family safe is going to take everything he's got.

About the Author

Cynthia Woolf is the award winning and best-selling author of ten historical western romance books, one short story, and one novella in the anthology Lost in a Kiss, with more books on the way. She was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia’s father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

Issues. Too much sex. Author loses thread of narrative. Characters under developed. Husband a bit dim at times. Just overall a good idea that fell totally flat.

The storyline had such potential. Sentence structure is short and choppy. Too many cliches. Lots of juicy back story that was glossed over with a line or two. Glad it was a freebie.

Her books are a great rainy afternoon read or just a great heartwarming read at any time. She always has the anxiety of a great change with falling in love (after a few speed bumps). Add a little danger for spice and you have an endearing story. There are some minor editing errors but they do not detract from the story line. Previous reviewers have complained about there being too many sexual scenes. It's a ROMANCE folks. Get over it! If you think this is over the top, you need to widen your author base and read some REAL hard core sex scenes or stick with Young Adult novels. They should be PG-13 enough for you but not by much.

Good story but too explicit for my taste. Definitely not for the young.

This is not a book. Playboy has more interesting articles in it. The book could have been a whole lot better had it not had so much sex in it. Romance and sex go together but not when they make romance sound like porn...

I am on page 35 and while the story may be good, I will never know whether it is or not because I cannot get past the poor grammar, the poor writing skills and the complete lack of proof reading in this book. When a writer says "he seen" instead of "he saw" it immediately breaks one's concentration and throws up a barrier to going further. There have also already been inconsistencies in the storyline.

I made it to page 37 and that was more than enough. Based on reading some of the reviews - the constant detailed descriptions of everything was extremely boring - so happy I gave up before the sex scenes. I am estatic that this was a free book - writer should pay people to read this book.

This could have been so much better. The writing style is unpolished and seems immature. Character development would start, then stall, then chage entirely. Full of inconsistencies.

The story was choppy - the characters weren't developed very well.

Great read with great characters. Editing did miss several bloopers, tho!

This story line is far too similar to the last two books ,nothing all that creative here.

Mail order bride arrives. Groom is crazy enough to pledge loyalty. Ex-mistresses goes even more crazy. Groom protects his family and has lots of sex. The end Oh and the authors' teachers should have corrected her when she wrote things like - her alone - instead of - she alone....

I wanted to like this book. Started out as the typical mail order bride scenario for the first few chapters and I was routing for Nellie and her family to find peace and happiness. Then it turned in to a sex book every few pages was a sex scene I felt like that was all the book was about. Not enough time was spent on character developement for my liking every scene felt rush so they could get back to the bedrooom. Violet was annoying, Nellie also at times. I am not a prude and have no problem with sex scenes in a romance novel but this was too over the top started skipping through them just to finish the book to see what happened. Should let people know in the description that it is racy. Definitely not what I expected. Disappointed!

Nellie is trying to better her situation for her children. She puts them first, and if putting them first means venturing across the country as a mail order bride then she's going to do it. Blake doesn't want love. He just wants the family image to gain support for a new business. They are both in for some surprises. I enjoyed this story, and I'm looking forward to more in this series. Nellie by Cynthia Woolf was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Enjoyable but needs editing! A cute historical romance which I enjoyed but was very frustrated by the repeated typo's and lack of editing - which is a huge shame as I enjoyed the book otherwise and it leads into what could be a good series if it was edited. This book is a free download, so it is worth a try and other than the typos I felt it was well written with interesting characters - not sure how historically correct they are....but we are reading fiction! I have bought the second in the series 'Annie' and also downloaded the first in a spin off from this series 'Mail Order Outlaw - The Brides of Tombstone', so I will see if these have better editing. If this book was edited and corrected it would be a four star review.
