After hearing about how good the anime was, I decided to check out the manga instead of the anime. From what I understand, the anime came first and later came with a different, but similar interpretation in the manga. After reading this, I got hooked on the series. This manga has 3 volumes in 1 and what makes it better is that it's for the nook. The action was entertaining, I enjoyed the characters and it also had the bonuses from the single volumes (interviews, notes, and sound effects).

Progressive knife has been drawn! Likely the first thing you will notice while reading this fine manga compilation is the absolutely spot-on artwork, it’s a dead ringer for the show, if not better. How is this even possible? Well it turns out that Sadamoto was the character designer on the landmark anime series of the same name, and it seems to me that he is also perfectly masterful at capturing the look, feel and movement of the mecha and every other aspect of the show to an uncanny degree. I haven’t done a scene-by-scene comparison but I think there may be more here than there is in the show, kind of a director’s cut in manga form. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is also credited with the story, so I’m not sure if he is extrapolating from the series or merely following the original script outline. Whatever is going on here is producing about as perfect of an adaptation as I could have wished for. Remarkable, a great companion for fans of the legendary anime series, or fans of comics in general. Don’t brush this one off as a lesser version of the show we all know and love, it isn’t, it can stand all on it’s own. An amazing piece of work.

If you are looking for BS religious symbolism and teenage angst then you have come to the right place. If you want a coherent story with interesting characters, look elsewhere.
