Overview

Very few hospitals have dedicated neurointensive care units for management of critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients. About the Author

Michel T. Torbey, MD, MPH, FAHA, FCCM, is Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Director of the Stroke Critical Care Program, and Director of the Neurointensive Care Unit at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also coeditor of The Stroke Book with Dr Magdy H. Selim, published in 2007.

Description: This is an overview of multidisciplinary critical care support of the patient with a principal neurologic diagnosis.
Purpose: This reference focuses on clinical decision-making and management for neurologic and neurosurgical patients with state-of-the-art reviews.
Audience: Senior trainees and practitioners from various disciplines treating the neurosurgical or neurologic patient are an appropriate audience for this work. Many of the contributors are from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
Features: After an overview of problems common to neurocritical care, the book covers specifics of monitoring for neurological conditions. The largest section, 14 chapters, describes critical care support for a variety of neurologic conditions including trauma and metabolic and infectious disorders. Spinal cord injury and other conditions are also discussed. A final group of six chapters describes the common medical disorders seen in the neurocritical care unit and provides the perspective of the medical consultant. Chapters range from 10 to 20 pages in length and are clearly written with adequate references, but format differs chapter to chapter. Good use is made of tables and line drawings, but illustrations and radiographs are limited and reproduce with acceptable but not outstanding quality. Much of the work is original but most references date to at least five years from publication.
Assessment: This book summarizes the standard approach to common problems in neurosurgical and neurologic patients. Insight from the perspective of consultants complements neuroscience material nicely. Available guidelines for neurocritical care from the past several years are summarized. The pharmacology and monitoring portions of the book are the most helpful.
