Never a Dull Moment

Never a Dull Moment

by Tommy Lee

The former Mötley Crüe drummer has left his Methods of Mayhem guise behind, but he's kept a fair number of the trappings of that band close at hand. While toning down the rap-metal rhythms to some degree, Never a Dull Moment nonetheless exudes much the same attitude, at turns snotty and sensitive (there are more than a few traces of regret on display over Lee's broken marriage to Pam Anderson). The best of these tunes -- "Body Architects," for instance -- allow Lee to stretch out a bit on percussion and put his surprisingly tuneful vocals to the fore. Lee pays a lot of attention to melody here, lending a Stone Temple Pilots-like tenor to chunky, driving songs like "Afterglow" and "Hold Me Down." A couple of the disc's experiments -- such as a radically retooled cover of David Bowie's "Fame" and the string section grafted onto "Ashamed" -- fall flat, but even so, Never a Dull Moment makes good on its title's boastful promise.
