Never Never Landby Jane Monheit
Jane Monheit, at 22 years old, has made a stunning debut with the help of some of the finest players in the world: Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash, David "Fathead" Newman, Hank Crawford, and Bucky Pizzarelli. From her first entrance on the supremely swinging "Please Be Kind," Monheit makes clear that she's the boss, even in such illustrious company. Her voice is about as close to flawless as a human can get, yet she's never coldly technical or aloof. While she's perfectly comfortable with the medium swing tempos of "More Than You Know," "Save Your Love for Me," and "Twisted," as well as the Latin groove of "My Foolish Heart," it are the ballads that really showcase Monheit's gift. If you don't get goosebumps listening to "Detour Ahead," "Never Let Me Go," and "Dindi," you probably don't have a pulse. The somewhat nostalgic thrust of Monheit's repertoire and style might prove a liability over time. In this sense, the equally young Claudia Acuña, who has displayed considerable arranging and writing chops, is a step ahead of her. Yet Monheit's budding musical adventurousness is made evident by her subtle vocal overdubs toward the end of "Dindi." Her revelatory approach to classic songs is highlighted by her a cappella performance of the seldom-heard introductory verse to "I've Got It Bad." But on future albums, lest she fall into a retro rut, she'll need to work on realizing her potential as a musical risk taker.

At last! A singer who exhibits the fact that she is a musician as well as a performer. I saw her at ''The Village Vanguard''. Don't miss her live performances.It is wonderful to be able to understand the poetry of the song.Some reviewers think that a song, if done by some other vocalist,should not be attempted by anyone else.(Joel Sigel's opinion).Not so. A composer wishes to have his music performed by as many as possible
I admit, I'm smitten! I'm watching her on Jazz Central TV. Never seen her before now, but I know now what I've been missing. It's thirty minutes into the program and I couldn't dream of changing the channel. Man-o-Man!
Jane Monheit sounds like a Cabaret singer of the 1940's and I'm glad! Her voice is so captivating that it sounds like a whole new genre of music. This is MUSIC in a pure and enjoyable form so unlike the annoying sound of rock and rap that I hope Jane's career and style will influence others and go on for a good part of the newborn Century to come! I LOVE this album and the Singer. I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone with a heartfelt love for good relaxing music with a flair for the romantic.
Wow! Fate let me hear this amazing singer. I am so impressed with her mature delivery and silky voice. Her rendition of Dindi is magical. Let's not forget her fabulous musicians. How wonderful for her to have had the opportunity to learn from the best. She shows us she can swing, pout, and capture emotion, and land that last note with authority. Her voice is a natural work of art. Where can I see her perform, and why in the world is she not on the front page?
Just when I thought we'd never hear another new singer who actually is pleasant to listen to and truly knows her craft,along comes Jane Monheit. As a professional singer myself, with some local success, I can truly appreciate Ms. Monheit's artistry. It is amazing that she is only 22years old!I think we are in for many years of enjoyment from this young vocalist.
Jazz fans: Ever since the passing of Sarah Vaughan and Julie London and the semi retirement of Keeley Smith, I have been listening and looking for a ''girl singer'' who could not only interpret the lyrics of the great standards but had the God given gift of a fabulous voice. In the last five years we have been blessed by at least two that fit this criteria: In classics it is the sensational Charlotte Church. In main line pop and jazz it is the equally fabulous Jane Monheit. I first heard Ms. Monheit on the July 4th PBS special. She didn't sing jazz that night but I was captivated by her pure and rich vocals on the show tunes she performed. I am sick and tired of the dozens of gimmicky and overly stylized singers who, sad to say, are making big bucks with little or no talent and basically bad voices. Miss Monheit is a needed and welcome change. She caresses a lyric in an understated way so reminiscent of Julie London, who, by the way, never got her due as a jazz vocalist. This first effort, NEVER NEVER LAND, is a 5 star performance. Sometime in the future I would love to hear Miss Monheit do an album with a lush Nelson Riddle type backing, ala Nat King Cole, and also a swinging big band backing, ala, Keeley Smith's latest album. This disc is the best I've bought in the past 3 years! I don't know what to say other than I can't get enough of this disc! How about another one like this? I would like to hear Jane do ''Stormy Weather.'' Thanks Jane. I would like to give this disc 6 stars.
