Overview

New American Imperialism: Bush's War on Terror and Blood for Oil by Bulent Gokay

Seeing US foreign policy following the September 11th attacks as a drive to impose a worldwide "Pax Americana" that would promote the political and economic interests of the United States and its allies, Fouskas (international relations, U. of Stirling, UK) and Gokay (international relations, Keele U.) seek to explain the origins and dynamics of this new imperialism. They explore the nature of the world economic system and other global structures and provide individual chapters analyzing the economic, political, military, and ideological dimensions of US power in the neo-imperial post-9/11 world. They then present case studies in support of their analytical framework, discussing US policy towards Caspian oil resources, the US/NATO war on Yugoslavia, the invasion of Iraq and Middle East policy in general, US involvement in regime change in Ukraine, and US response to the Asian tsunami.
