Overview

New Millennium Dance Party

Rhino's Millennium series is one of the most successful that they released in the early 21st century, not just in terms of sales, but in terms of giving the people what they want. They promise to deliver the biggest songs of a particular style on one disc, and while some cuts may be missing on certain discs, it's usually hard to argue with what's there. Nowhere is this more evident than on New Millennium Dance Party, a 19-track collection that attempts to dabble in every different dance style of the '90s, from the glitzy coked-out grooves of Stereo MC's and EMF to Jason Nevins' remix of Run-D.M.C., Moby's "Bodyrock," Olive's trip-hop "You're Not Alone," and the big beat of Fatboy Slim's "Right Here Right Now." Really, all that's missing are selections from the Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy, but it says a lot that this collection is so damned entertaining that they're not missed at all. This is a really fun party album, filled with great singles -- let's face it, any collection that has "Groove is in the Heart," "Cantaloop," "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)," "Connected," "C'mon N' Ride It (The Train)," "Pump up the Volume," "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)," "The Power," and "Missing" on one disc isn't just a terrific listen, it pretty much defines what mainstream dance music was all about in the '90s.
