people like jasonmt that review books without reading is whats wrong with our political landscape. daniel hannan is british and not part of the 'republican propaganda machine.' the book perfectly illustrates the importance of the constitution and why it requires protecting. this is an interesting read regardless of ideology.

Mr. Hannan reviews the shared history of the UK and America, its politically (mostly) parallel trajectories since the Revolutionary War, and the ways in which the UK has recently gone down the wrong path away from freedom and towards stifling and unaccountable bureaucracy.  In doing so, he reminds us Americans of where we are on the right track and where we are starting to head down the same wrong path that his country has already taken.

After reading Daniel Hannan's later excellent book: Inventing Freedom, I sought out this earlier book. The title sets a high bar. It did not disappoint. Mr. Hannan' works remind us of just how unique our Republic and our Freedoms are. But they are also fragile. If we allow ourselves to take for granted just how precious they are, they will continue to erode and even collapse perhaps forever. Please read and heed this important, timely warning.

I somehow missed this title 7 years ago. However, it is still relevant with most excellent observations. It tells us what we have from a Briton who doesn't want us to lose it. We have survived the last administration ... barely and must protect what we have and not let it go.

I feel like he hijacked the title to better assimilate his ideology with Hayek's. Go for the original, it's still applicable.
