Overview

Since witnessing her parents' murders at the age of eleven, Phoenix's only purpose in life has been to uphold her mother's dying words- to be strong and survive. But surviving outside of The Walls- outside of The Sanctuary- is more like a drawn-out death sentence. A cruel and ruthless city, Tartarus is run by the Tribes whose motto is simple, "Join or die."

Refusing to join and determined to live, Phoenix fights to survive in this savage world. But who can she trust, when no one can be trusted? Not even herself.

About the Author

As a child Jennifer loved getting lost in the stories of others, but struggled greatly with reading. A notoriously slow reader who stumbled with words and spelling, Jennifer shied away from books, leaning heavily on musical theater and movies to get her inspirational fix.

It was not until in her mid-teens, when a persistent friend convinced her to read the Harry Potter series, that Jennifer found her love for the written word. J.K. Rowling’s books opened doors not only to the fascinating world of a young wizard, but to a life filled with a multitude of literary friends and fantastical worlds. Once a timid reader, Jennifer now devours books and loves getting lost in a new series.

Jennifer had wanted to write her own novel since her early twenties, but unfortunately inspiration doesn’t always strike on command. Her first book, The Chosen, was completed in 2013. But as most first attempts go, it was a flop. While looking through a multitude of rejection letters, inspiration struck again, putting Grace’s story got on hold as Phoenix’s began.

New World: Rising began to fill Jennifer’s brain, flowing like a fully opened valve from her fingertips. What was once such a struggle in her early years suddenly became a passion.

When Jennifer is not writing, she is enjoying life in Colorado, rock climbing, camping, exploring new foods, playing with her golden retriever, Duke, and sharing her life with her handsome and wonderful husband.

Oh my goodness, I effing loved this book! From the first chapter, even from the first paragraph it hooked me, the story of a girl left on her own in a very scary world with only a journal with tips on how to survive that new hostile environment that she was going to be living in or better said, surviving in. How she managed to stay alive, not by luck, but by will power, what a strong female character, I loved her. The book is very fast paced, In every chapter we learn something new, we meet new people and more situations arise, that helps a lot to make the book more enjoyable, and even though as I said is fast paced, you still get the time to get close to certain characters, like Phoenix, Triven and Mouse, you get to know them and care for them in this environment that is constantly changing and asking more and more of them. I really liked that Phoenix is so strong, and I don’t only mean physically but emotionally as well, I adored the fact that she acted like a grown up, that she used her head and that even though she fought against caring for other people she ended up so invested in her new friendships, we can really see the change in her happening throughout the book and that was just wonderful. The ending was brilliant and what a cliffhanger, definitely going to keep reading this series.

This book was such a page-turner. I read it in one sitting – which I haven’t done in a really long time. It was exciting, action-packed and an easy to follow plot. At first, I only wanted to get this book because of the cover, but it has become one of my favorite books I read this year. It is a hidden gem in the dystopian genre that everyone should read next. It’s fast-paced, has an interesting main character and the setting is a great blend of Mad Max and Divergent (at least, that’s what it reminded me of). So if you enjoy either of those, you’ll enjoy this book.

New World: Rising is definitely one of the best dystopia reads that I've come across in a long time! It was fast paced and interesting. I loved the writing and the characters were awesome. There was some tropes that come along with YA dystopian but I didn't mind it. The world building was pretty great. There was some info dumping in the beginning but that didn't really matter because the world that Jennifer Wilson created was so interesting. Phoenix is a really cool main character. She's independent, self aware, and really smart. Overall, I read this book in just a couple of sittings because it was so fact paced and I really enjoyed it. I'm starting book two really soon because I can't wait to see what happens next. If you love dystopian books, please pick this book up because it's great.

I have so much love for this book. It hooked me from the very beginning. Phoenix is a tough girl. She’s had to survive on the streets on her own, and finds it really hard to trust others. I don’t blame her at all because of all the awful things she’s seen and done. I did enjoy seeing how she interacts with the others in The Sanctuary. The people there don’t trust her, and she doesn’t care for them either, well, most of them anyway. She doesn’t cower to anyone there, and that takes a lot of guts. She becomes protective of a little girl, and doesn’t want to see her get hurt. I also adore Triven. He’s got a few secrets we learn along the way, but he’s an overall great guy. I love the world building in New World Rising. It’s got that hopelessness that we see in most dystopians, but it feels so real and raw. I could picture every part of Tartarus while I was reading, and I absolutely love when I feel like I’m walking in the book. There is quite a bit of action. Like I said, Phoenix is tough, and she definitely knows how to take down her enemies. She has a lot to prove with the residents of the Sanctuary, and she does a damn good job. If you love dystopian this is definitely one you need to pick up. It’s fast paced, full of action, and even has some romance.

I loved the book! Phoenix is a strong female lead, who's story kept me engaged from the first page. This book evoked a multitude of emotions ranging from heart fluttering love to egregious anger.   If you love dystopian books, like The Hunger Games, Divergent or Legend, you will love this book! I highly recommend New World: Rising.
