Newsies [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]by Alan Menken
Newsies is Disney's 1992 return to that rarest form of film, the live-action musical. With original music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, the music tells the story of the 1899 New York City newsboy rebellion against newspaper kings William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. The film was dead on arrival and played in some lucky local cinemas for two weeks. This was sad news, considering that it could have been the beginning of a whole new musical generation. The music of Newsies has since gained a following and has a timeless appeal, joining the roots of a great Broadway musical while attempting to fit the songs to their era. Despite the 1990s production, we are expected to believe the songs might have been sung by newsboys in the 1890s. We don't, of course -- the songs are too elaborate and pop driven (it is also likely that a newsboy who was more melodic than a hum or whistle would have been put in his place if the newsies are as rough as this film would have us believe). It works as a timeless piece, though, because it is a mixture of then and now -- while the arrangements are cheerfully old-fashioned, you can almost picture Nsync filling in for the vocalists who are comprised of trained singers and actors, including the great Welsh actor Christian Bale (American Psycho). Bale plays Jack Kelly, the leader of the rebellion, and was confident enough to lend his own vocals. It was a smart move, as he brings the ballad "Santa Fe" to stunning highs. It is not the only high on this album, which is charged with circus level excitement throughout. It is astounding that, in a film consumed with grand musical ambition, not one of the songs was selected for an Academy Award nomination. The touching call for justice "Seize the Day," "Carrying the Banner," the Newsie theme, the joyous "High Times, Hard Times," sung by Ann-Margret, the demanding proclamation "The World Will Know," and the absolutely terrific "King of New York" are each worthy of repeated listening. The film itself is worthy of a second chance.

I ran across this movie and FELL IN LOVE! It is a musical that you can't help tapping your feet to and singing along! Share it with your friends and family!
The first time I saw this movie I was probably 11 or 12. Some friends of mine would sing the songs non-stop - I had the words memorized simply by being around them! But when I saw the movie, I hated it! I swore I'd never see it again. But when I was 16 I was curious about it again, so I decided to watch it. I absolutely fell in love with it. I was already in love with Christian Bale from Little Women and the voice of Thomas in Pocahontas. Now here he was singing and dancing... uh! Once I borrowed it from my friends, I watched it twice a day for a week! I just absolutely love this movie. It is one of the best movies ever made!
I cannot explain how wonderful the music from the Newsies is. The movie, the music, and the actors are all incredible and it just brings joy to hear such good music today. I cannot recommend it enough!
I have enjoyed this movie and its music forever and will continue to do so.
The first time I saw Newsies was at a musical theatre camp. As soon as I heard "Carrying the Banner" and saw the great choreography, I knew this would be an all time favorite. The songs keep getting stuck in my head, but I don't care because they're so great! I think I've driven my friends crazy from singing them all the time.
Newsies is a terrific movie for the both young and old. Its one that I will enjoy watching for many more years.
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and the soundtrack makes it even better. The energy and enthusiasum that is in all of the songs really draws you in, and keeps you. I thought the actors all portrayed their characters amazingly well, especially Christian Bale. He blew the others away in this outstanding performance. Great movie, and even better soundtrack! :)
This music is wonderful. Even if you've never seen the movie or ever heard the music, you'll fall in love with it when you first hear it. This is music at its best!!! You can't help but love this music! Absolutely awesome!!!
This movie is amazing!! I am really excited that they rereleased the cd! This is a great cd and a wonderful musical.
My best friend and I have loved this movie for about 3 years! I first saw it in grade school, but we went back to it in high school! The music and mentality of the characters is a real energy booster!!
This is the best movie AND soundtrack in the entire world! I always sing Carrying The Banner at school! I love it!
I love the music and the movie! I've watched the movie so many times. It a must see movie and it has a soundtrack that you just have to listen to. It combines an upbeat style of the musical movie that takes place in the late 1800's. The movie was amazing. Being a dancer myself, i was amazed at what these guys could do! The choreography was was well done and the actors, dancers, ans singers were incredible! This is a must see, must listen movie that your family will love! I certianly did! ;)
I have loved this movie and music since the first time i saw and heard it. Im a student in high school and i have had to do two music groups try outs and both times I sang Santa Fe and Seize the Day. My friends and I spend time just singing through the musical. I wrote this just to show that the musical Newsies isn't just adored by adults but by teens too. Thank you.
Even thought the plot is a little hard to swallow(with the neat and tidy boys) the movie is a lot of fun to watch and sing along to. So much so that the soundtrack is a great companion. It also helps to have cutie-pie actors like Christian Bale and Gabriel Damon in the movie!:)
hey y'all if you haven't ever seen this movie or heard the music, you're the one who's missing out. The guys are hot, the music is great, and the story line is wonderful. It is one of the great disney feel good movies. And though i am one person listen, cause (movie quote) ''sometimes all it takes is a voice; one that becomes one hundred, then one thousand... unless it's silenced.'' Plus ''WE BEAT 'EM!'' We whined so much they re-released it on vhs and dvd. GO GET IT! RUN! There IS a ''fire inside us that won't stop burning''. so get it while it's here. it is one of the top five soundtracks i've ever heard!!
I first saw the movie in my chorus class at school. I was awestruck, this is a great musical! i was so surprised that the critics gave it bad reviews cause this musical has it all! Great choreography, action, comedy, drama, this is a great movie for everyone! The soundtrack has to be the best part though ,the music is absolutly inspirational!
I can't decide which one I love more-the movie or the soundtrack! I've been watching the Newsies since I was 6 and I still love every song they sing. They have amazing voices and catchy songs you can listen to over and over agan! =)
i've only watched the movie twice so far, and each time i couldn't wait to watch it again, but i've listened to the soundtrack countless times!!!!!! the songs are great! THIS IS AN AWESOME MOVIE!!! the music, the choreographed dances, the SONGS, it was the best movie i have ever watched. i would seriously give it atleast TEN stars if i could.
The first time i saw Newsies i loved it and you will too. The music is wonderful and it brings more life to the action.
I love this movie and the soundtrack. As much as I love the songs with lyrics on this soundtrack, I also love the instrumentals. I can feel what's happening during the Escape from Snyder... It's great!! Everyone should get this album, it's really a treasure, and It's all sung by the actual kids in the movie! All triple threat actors who sing, dance, and act wonderfully. And Aaron Lohr (Mush) is to DIE FOR. ~Skittles
I was first introduced to the Newsies by a friends I met at camp. She is obsessed and quickly after I saw it I became obsessed as well! The soundtrack is great for me because I love all of the songs and when I can't have the movie with me I can listen to the songs like on my way to school and in the car and in my room and all over! So by getting the soundtrack you won't be disapointed at all cause it's amazing! I love spot conlon!!!
These stars light up the screen! Whether you're a kid, or an adult, girl, or boy, you'll enjoy it just the same. Especially since the events of September 11, they really bring out the strengths and wonders of New York City. This movie shows that together, even newsboys can challenge the most powerful people. So watch the movie, listen to the soundtrack, and find out how these newsboys from New York let the powerful, along with the rest of the world, know that children have rights, and the power to defend them.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE IN THE WORLD! THIS STORY LINE IS REALLY GREAT, AND THE MUSIC IS INCREADIBLE! I AM A HUGE MUSICAL FAN, AND BY FAR THIS MOVIE OUTNUMBERS ALL OF THE OTHER MUSICALS OUT THERE! IT IS A GREAT MOVIE TO WATCH WITH YOUR WHOLE FAMILY AND IS SHOWS SOME GREAT VIEWS ON SOME BIG ISSUES! I RECOMEND THIS MOVIE TO EVERYONE! I HAVE NEVER LOVED A MOVIE AS MUCH AS I LOVE NEWSIES! NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU WATCH IT AFTER IT ENDS YOU WILL WANT TO WATCH IT AGAIN!!!!
I love the movie and the soundtrack is great. I can take the music anywhere. The songs have a catchy beat and the lyrics are great. If you haven't seen the movie, watch it! It is my all time favorite movie.
