"Next to You is a bittersweet story about perseverance and adversity. Burdened with emotional and physical scars, Phlox and Jared have to learn to deal with these drastic changes to their appearance and soul. Julia Gabriel does an amazing job of conveying the characters' feelings. The writing style is flawless, and the characters are both multifaceted and dynamic." -RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars, Top Pick
A scarred and lonely billionaire hiding from his past ...
Jared Connor lost his innocence at the age of ten when his father poured gasoline around the family home and left his two young sons to die in the flames. Now an adult, he's carefully crafted a pretend life where he can hide his scars and his death row father behind the disguise of a caretaker's pickup truck and a pair of gardening shears. But when a beautiful woman with scars of her own barges into his quiet, solitary life, Jared finds it increasingly difficult to hide from what he really wants.
A successful young businesswoman ill at ease in her newfound beauty ...
Phlox Miller was never the pretty girl and no magic mascara or secret serum was ever going to change that-not even one manufactured by her own company. When an accident at her country home burns her face and body, she spares no expense on her recovery and plastic surgery. Now she turns heads on the street, but can't recognize herself in the mirror-and can't convince the man she loves that he's beautiful, too.
Can two people see beyond their physical and emotional scars to find true love and lasting acceptance?

I was given a gifted copy by Story Cartel. Jared has suffered a big trauma when he was ten years old and now that he is an adult he still suffers from it and he doesn’t trust anybody. Phlox doesn’t recognize her face when she looks at her reflection in the mirror. She needs to move on but it is not easy. This is a good example of “Never judge a book by its cover”. Two scarred people where the scars are deeper than the ones on the skin. Two people who have suffered by people’s rejection. The book is about Jared and Phlox battles against their nightmares. When they meet they feel attracted to each other, first because they have lived through similar situations but later becomes something else, something powerful and worth to give it a try. A very touching story, about love and protection but also about pain and regret. I like how the author describes the feeling of Jared and Phlox.
Jarad had a lot of scars on his face and body as when he was ten and his brother Jake was eight his father set the house on fire with his kids in it. Jarad saved Jake’s life and Jake is fine. But Jarad believes no one will ever love him because of the scars and why he has them. His father is setting on death row and even now appealing his death sentence. Jarad is a billionaire and sold his business and lives in seclusion as a caregiver. Then he meets the woman who owns the home he is taking care of and she is rich also. Phlox is strong and she is a scientist. She also has been burned in an explosion but she had several surgeries to repair her face now she doesn’t even recognize her own face. Jarad had internal as well as external scars. Either Jarad nor Phlox have dealt with what happened to them. Yet Phlox does seem to look past the scars and sees him as the man. This was a beautiful and moving story and plot maybe a bit like beauty and the beast but that is fine with me. This is awesome either way. Some parts made me laugh and some made me choke up and shed a few tears. I couldn’t put it down. The characters were superb especially Phlox and Jarad and all the twists and turns they went through. I highly recommend. I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.
I liked this book, it was very heartfelt while still being sexy and without being sappy
