In New York Times bestselling author Denise Swanson’s “slightly zany”* new mystery series, Devereaux Sinclair loves running her old-fashioned store in her small Missouri hometown. If only murder didn’t keep landing on her doorstep…

Dev’s five-and-dime may be doing well, but her love life is in turmoil. She’s torn between Deputy U.S. Marshal Jake Del Vecchio, who is on an undercover assignment, and her ex-beau Noah Underwood, the local doctor from a high-society family. So she welcomes the distraction when Elise Whitmore offers her a great deal on antique chocolate molds that would be perfect for her Easter gift baskets. But do the molds actually belong to Elise’s soon-to-be ex-husband? In buying them, has Dev committed a felony?
When Elise is found shot to death, the mystery deepens—and Dev’s good friend Boone, who discovered the body, is taken into custody. With the help of her best buds, Dev must clear Boone’s name and find the real killer. Good thing that when it comes to amateur sleuths, they broke the mold with Dev Sinclair.

dev buys some antique chocolate molds from elise just before elise is shot and killed. elise was divorcing her husband and dev wasn't sure the molds were elise's to sell. boone is arrested for the murder since he was found in her home just after the murder. dev and her friends poppy and noah band together to solve the murder and free boone. noah has another goal, he wants to reunite with dev on a romantic level, dev isn't sure since they parted in anger many years ago, but she discovers she may have feelings for noah after all. but also feelings for her new beau jake. love this new series, and hope there will be a long run of stories to read. the characters are interesting and the stories are intriguing. frankly the romance is good too, i'm pulling for noah. jake will be out of town too much as an fbi agent working in another town. get this one, read it and i guarantee you will enjoy it!!!

Nickeled and Dimed to Death is the second book in the A Devereaux's Dime Store Mystery series. Elise Whitmore comes in the Five and Dime with some antique chocolate molds that Dev knows would be a great addition for her Easter gift baskets. She finds the money needed to purchase them, soon she hears that may actually belong to Elise's soon to be ex. Then a couple days later panic does set in as Dev learns that Elise has been found dead. She fears that someone may find out that she might have possible stolen items. Those fears come front and center when she learns that Elise has been found shot in the head. Soon she learns that her long time friend Boone has been taken in for questioning for the murder. Dev contacts her other childhood friend, Poppy owner of Gossip Central, a local watering hole and a great source of information. Add to this Dev has also been stood up by Jake, a U. S. Marshall and someone she was hoping to get to know better. Then with everything so much in turmoil, her ex boyfriend Noah, the one that dumped her when her father got sent to jail, calls and asks her to go to benefit dance. He offers to introduce her to a friend of his that is interested in purchasing a number of her gift baskets. Well, it is business, so what's the harm? Well...... Elise's husband has been having an affair, so maybe his mistress is the one. But then the husband, but maybe he want her out of the picture completely and Elise has been selling off his many collectibles. Or maybe someone else has a grudge against Elise. Looking forward to the next to see what Dev's next adventure will be and how she is doing in the romance department.

Devereaux Sinclair loves running her old-fashioned store in her small Missouri hometown. If only murder didn’t keep landing on her doorstep… Dev’s five and dime is doing great but her personal life is a mess. She has feelings for two men, Deputy U.S. Marshall Jake Del Vecchio and Noah Underwood, her high school boyfriend, who is now the local doctor. His high society family came between them in the past but he claims he can now stand up to his mother. When Elise Whitmore stops by her store to offer to sell her some antique chocolate molds that would be perfect for her Easter gift baskets she gets her mind off her love life and back to business. Dev realizes this is a deal to good to pass on but wonders why Elise is selling them. Are they even hers to sell? Elise and her husband are getting divorced, maybe she shouldn’t have bought the molds. Not long after selling the molds Elise is found shot to death. Dev’s friend Boone is the one that found her and he has been taken into custody. Dev wishes Jake wasn’t away on an assignment because she could use his help. So she rounds up her friends including Noah to find the real killer and clear Boone’s name. A romantic cozy mystery! I absolutely loved this story!! None of Dev’s friends or her Grandmother think much of Noah. He treated her badly and they are holding a grudge. Dev is ready to forgive and forget but her friends are not letting her rush into anything. They like her so much better with Jake. Unfortunately Jake is spending a lot of time away from Shadow Bend and he is with his boss who just happens to be his ex-wife. Romantic tension – just a bit! The mystery is quite complex with several suspects and by solving it Dev Sinclair may be finding more than a killer. I love the twists the author has given that connect the books in this series by more than the characters and the setting. The characters are so warm and real. Fantastic dialogue. It is very easy to imagine pulling up a stool at the soda fountain for a cherry coke or grabbing a chair in the crafting alcove to catch up with them and learn what’s happening in this little town in Missouri. I anxiously await my next visit with Dev, Gran, Jake, Noah, Poppy and Boone! I wonder what kind of trouble Denise Swanson has planned for the wonderful cast!

Let's knock out the negative first, I don't see Noah and Dev together, friends yes, but to me they don't have the sizzle. Not thrilled with the diagnosis of the mayor with low blood pressure, I have low blood pressure but if mine was as low as his I would be hospitalized (as a matter of fact I was). I'm also not a big fan of Poppy, her friend is arrested and she acts like a brat, she'll make a scene at the police station to embarrass her father? Really, are you going to hold your breath next? Any way that being said I love Dev and her grandma. Noah is much more likeable in this book, he is trying to get back in Dev's, and friends good graces, and is quite good at finding out info. He's a likeable guy, but I just see him as a friend. The mystery was excellent with a lot of suspects, and a plot with so many twists, plus a surprise one that kept me guessing. I will definitely move on to the next in the series.
