Nielsen, Mozart: Clarinet Concertos

For his third release on Signum Classics, Julian Bliss performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622," and Carl Nielsen's "Clarinet Concerto," two of the most popular works for his instrument and arguably the most profound concertos in the clarinet's repertoire. Accompanied by the Royal Northern Sinfonia, conducted by Mario Venzago, Bliss shades his timbres and expressions with smooth gradations, and adjusts his tone to suit the rounded Classical sound required in his live performance of the Mozart concerto and the edgier sonorities in the Nielsen work, which was recorded in the studio. Between the two concertos, Bliss plays his own arrangements of two Mozart arias, "Non che non sei capace, K. 419," and "Der Liebe himmlisches Gefühl, K. 119," which give him room to stretch out and display his virtuosity. The recordings of all the performances are clear and well-balanced, and Bliss is placed front and center in the mix, highlighting the nuances of his polished playing.
