The Night Flyers by Elizabeth McDavid Jones

Winner of the Edgar Award: When her homing pigeons disappear while her father is fighting in World War I, a twelve-year-old girl suspects a German spy may be responsible

With her father in France, fighting in the war, Pam Lowder has the responsibility of taking care of the family’s prize-winning homing pigeons on their farm. The birds are special because her father trained them to fly at night so they can bring messages to his family when he’s not there. And now a stranger with a foreign accent has shown up in Currituck with an offer to buy the whole lot.
But Pam isn’t interested in selling. She loves the pigeons and would much rather spend time with them than go to school. Then she wakes up one morning to find some pigeons missing. After the disappearance of Caspian, her favorite, the plucky pigeoneer sets a plan in motion to catch the thief. She has a pretty good idea who it is. But how is she supposed to rescue her pigeons and outwit a German spy?
This ebook includes a historical afterword.

The book The Night Flyers is perfect for boys and girls because it has information on historical times and it has so many mysteries yet to be solved. I loved this book. It was the best. This is what you always read in these reviews (hint, hint, wink, wink). I do agree that this book is wonderful. The auther brings Pam to life. Her writing is wonderful. However, some of her other books really stink. I wouldn't read Secerets on 26th street or Watcher in Piney Woods. Boring! Another thing that is boring are reviews that only say "The Night Flyers is for all mystery lovers, even if they aren't too intrigued with history", like the reviewer from September 10th told us. She also said that my sister, Astrea, spells like a seven year old. She writes reviews like a seven year old. GET IT! Anyways, this is a wonderful book for middleschool level girls (and boys as well).

The Night Flyers is for all mystery lovers, even if they aren't too intrigued with history. As studies have shown, children who read books they like have better grammar and spelling skills. However, 13 year old Astrea, who also reviewed this book on July 18, 2001, has the spelling of a seven year old. It wouldn't hurt to have her read some more History Mysteries. P.S. "Siris" is spelled "series" SERIES! Got it?

Just when I was going to give up on the History Mystery seris I read this. I was surprise at how exciting this book realy is, since the last two weren't my style. I truely beileve that this book has definantly deserved it's award. This book has both suspence and excitement, the two things that mystery books call for. I recomend this book for ages 10-12.

This outstanding, wonderfully written book deserves more than one award. It is a book of suspense and keeps you turning the pages. The ending has an unexpected turn which makes it a real, quality mystery. By far, the best history mystery yet. Help Pam solve the mystery of THE NIGHT FLYERS! Take advantage of an award winning book and an outstanding author!
