About the Author

Clive Lodge was born in 1909. He joined the RAF voluntarily during the Second World War, serving mainly as a navigator with the rank of flight lieutenant. He usually flew Beaufighters - on night-fighting missions - but like many people he always had a deep affection for the Spitfire.
Immediately after the war he was sent to India as an Intelligence Officer to investigate the causes of crashes by planes returning British troops home.
After leaving the RAF, Clive worked in banking for many years but his twin preoccupations were inventions - he won medals for his fog lamp and his cloches designs - and boats - he and a couple of friends set up a boat yard in Lymington, Hampshire, making power boats.
Always active, at seventy, he fell out of an oak tree, electric saw in hand. Amazingly he survived the fall.

Clive Lodge died in 1983.
