Overview

An addictive new drug fuels superhuman strength and speed in this action-packed sci-fi thriller that will have fans of Scott Westerfeld and Marie Lu on the edge of their seats.

Only those young enough can survive tetra, a dangerous drug that creates a pulse-pounding rush of enormous strength and incredible speed. Seventeen-year-old Alana West has been trained to use tetra so she can pursue the young criminals who abuse its power—criminals like the one who nearly killed her kid brother.

On tetra, Alana is unstoppable—an explosive blur as she surges through New York City. But with the clock ticking down to her eighteenth birthday, Alana will soon be too old for the rush . . . when just one more dose will prove deadly.

Supported only by her steady handler, Tucker, Alana goes undercover, infiltrating an elite gang of breaknecks to stop their supply of the drug. But when Alana gets trapped on the wrong side of the law, she learns the breaknecks are not quite what they seem—especially Ethan, the boy who seems to see the truth inside her. With her dependency on tetra increasing, Alana must decide where her loyalties lie, before the rush ends. Forever.

Mostly predictable twists (there was one that got me), uninteresting story, and an irritating main character. The story tends to glorify drug use, and not in a way of making it seem great, but it happens by default by not actually drawing attention to whatever the downsides were for the main character. They felt like mild annoyances but nothing actually bad or detrimental. The romances felt forced and hard to believe. Overall, I didn't find much to fully like about the book, but it was a decent easy read if you're interested.

This is the BEST action book I have read in a long, long time. Night Speed's plot centers around Tetra—a drug that makes you super fast for nine minutes. It also makes you see the world in a new and colorful way—and that's exactly how I felt while reading this book. Night Speed got my adrenaline pumping to the point where my hands were shaking and it left me breathless. Experiencing all of the highs and lows of the main character made me feel so alive. Night Speed has cast me under its spell, and to call it amazing is a total understatement. I couldn't contain the overflowing joy I felt when I was reading, it was an overwhelmingly thrilling adventure that I want everyone to experience, so do yourself a favor and go buy this awe-inspiring book! I received an advanced copy of the book and was not able to put it down! When it comes to strong young characters, once again Chris Howard does not disappoint! Alan West is set to be trained to pursue criminals like the one who nearly killed her younger brother. If you can survive, the tetra is filled with danger and thrills. There is a new drug that gives you the power and speed to make it. With the help of Tucker, Alana goes undercover to stop the abuse of the new drug by criminals. Then things go wrongs and are not quite as they once seemed. Alana is becoming dependent on the drug and must decide where her loyalties lie.

The premise of this intrigued me right from the first time I read it, so I was pretty eager to read it. I liked Alana well enough. She's got a few issues and it's all pretty understandable why she acts the way she does, but I struggled with liking her for the entire book. I love love loved some of the supportive characters, so I even if I was hating Alana in a a scene, there were some great people to love. The main plot point of the story was interesting and the scenes where Alana was on tetra were absolutely captivating. The imagery of the drug was vivid and quite immersive. Overall, the plot was fast and a roller coaster of emotions. There were slight swoons, heartbreak, laughter, and a few things I didn't see coming. Quite enjoyable. **Huge thanks to Katherine Tegen Books and Edelweiss for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review***
