The Nightmare Garden (Iron Codex Series #2) by Caitlin Kittredge

Everything Aoife thought she knew about the world was a lie. There is no Necrovirus. And Aoife isn't going to succomb to madness because of a latent strain—she will lose her faculties because she is allergic to iron. Aoife isn't human. She is a changeling—half human and half from the land of Thorn. And time is running out for her.

When Aoife destroyed the Lovecraft engine, she released the monsters from the Thorn Lands into the Iron Lands and now she must find a way to seal the gates and reverse the destruction she's ravaged on the world that's about to poison her.

Is it a trend now to kill off the love interest in the middle book just to drive the plot of the 3rd?

I loved The Iron Thorn and have anxiously awaited the next book in the series. While I recommend either re-reading book one or at least refreshing your memory a little before starting this one, I thought Caitlin did a nice job of building upon the world and characters begun in The Iron Thorn. The Nightmare Garden is dark, fast-paced, complex, and riveting. Aoife hasn't changed a whole lot since book one, but everyone else has grown quite a bit. I love the added world building in the mists and the arctic--so real and vivid. I found myself riding an emotional roller coaster: at times angry, sometimes frustrated or apprehensive, sometimes hopeful, and at one point absolutely heartbroken. The Nightmare Garden is an excellent sequel--even better than The Iron Thorn!! So, so good! I can't wait to see where Caitlin takes us in book 3.

Once again, Caitlin Kittredge delivers. The Nightmare Garden is a wonderfully dark sequel to The Iron Thorn & further proof that she has conquered the YA market. I read it in a 2-day marathon. Could not put it down. Lovecraft, steampunk, horror & fantasy fans rejoice--this is the best YA series being written today!!!
