Overview

Carl Anderson's polished sophisti-funk single "Magic" (1984) and Margie Joseph's number 12 R&B hit "Knockout" (1982) aside, the eighth volume of Nighttime Lovers is filled with songs that didn't make an impact on commercial U.S. radio. Among the highlights here are Cool Runners' "Play the Game (So You Think It's Funny)," Charades' "Gimme the Funk," Direct Drive's "Pass the Paper," and Mona Raye's West End-released "I've Been Watching You." As ever, the sound quality varies, as some tracks are evidently mastered from vinyl. One doesn't have to be an audiophile to encounter some difficulties while listening to some of the selections. That said, it's not as if many of these mostly independent releases are likely to get better treatment.
