Having just upgraded to the Nikon D5100 from the older D70-and not being familiar with a lot of the 'newer' features of the latest Nikon DSLRs- I found this guide to be invaluable in pointing out addtional features that the manual and user guide covered in a more cursory manner. Most importantly, suggestions for in-camera image processing settings and the author's experience and easy to follow instructions were tremendously valuable and time saving for me. Most of the topics covered in the Nikon manuals are given much more in-depth coverage in this field guide. In addition, there are a couple of chapters which address explanation of exposure, lens operation, etc for those people new to photography and DSLRs. This is kept to a minimum -- but makes this guide a good all-round supplement for any D5100 owner, no matter what his or her level of expertise.

If you are looking for a great tutorial book, this is it! The manual that comes with the camera is for the birds. This goes better into depth.

An excellent book.  Not too long and not too short.  Covers all the topics in just enough depth.  Would recommend this book to all levels of photographers.

Being new to photography with SLR cameras and being that I couldn't make head nor tails of the guide that came with the camera, I decided to pick up an additional guide. I took a look at some of the other books and they were about as dry and interesting as the original camera guide. This book was full of vibrant full color pictures and tells you all about the buttons and dials, and as an added bonus there's a chapter that covers the basics on all kinds of different photography. Oh yeah! there's a section on video that tells you a bunch of tricks on how to use the video more effectively. I highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't want to read a dry old manual and wants to learn some new insights into photography.
