When you're seeking what is authentic, what is true, books have a way of falling into your path. Nine Jewels of Night is such a book. Written by Beverly Lanzetta, it is both memoir and revelatory wisdom text. Lanzetta interweaves an account of her life as a contemporary woman, scholar, mother of four, and mystic, with the deep spiritual experiences that led her to construct a new understanding of divine consciousness. Nine Jewels of Night depicts both the suffering and the joy of being human in a body that is not separate from the spirit, of being embodied in the secular not separate from the sacred. Lanzetta speaks of direct communion with God unmediated by religious authorities, and the oppression that spiritual hierarchies within traditional religions have wrought on women and men who hear a call to know a greater reality than our institutions permit. If you heed a spark to follow a voice within that you have no words to articulate, or if you are just curious about what it means to be a person of faith undefined by conventional religious terms, read this book.

Nine Jewels of Night is a rare spiritual gem for our times, Beverly Lanzetta offers an intimate and unblinking account of her own journey as she heals wounds and struggles of her past, asks timeless questions, and is led to a revelatory and transformative experience of God’s suffering and love. Situated not on some esoteric and unreachable plane, but in the context of her everyday life, we follow the author’s footsteps as she learns that despite all evidence to the contrary, marriage to the Holy is both possible and necessary. In our complex and challenged times, here is a book, and a doorway, into a world where the Divine is intimate, where all are held tenderly, where speech is gentle, truth is radiant and persistent, and where we are invited to co-participate with the Divine in the sufferings and the joys of the world.
