CHILDREARING A child psychologist and director of Barcelona's Child and Adolescent Institute, Bronstein, in collaboration with writer Vargas, has created a valuable guide for parents interested in fostering their children's innate creativity. The authors discuss the child's development stages from birth through age 12 and suggest activities, toys, and household objects for each age to encourage creativity. Throughout, they stress the importance of offering the child a variety of things to do and allowing free time to choose activities. Limits to insure safety and responsibility are also part of the plan. Bronstein and Vargas also note that pressure and forced participation in activities stifle the creative spark. Photographs, sidebars with summary statements, and shaded boxes with case histories provide examples of creative activities. Although the book lacks a bibliography, it offers practical information that will help parents stimulate their children's minds and foster creativity in all areas of life.
