No. 1 Cowboy

Obviously, the main focus of No. 1 Cowboy is Marty Robbins' classic gunfighter ballads and cowboy-themed songs from the '60s and '70s. Originally recorded for Columbia, these 20 tracks have a quality that can't be denied: "Red River Valley," "Streets of Laredo," "Ballad of the Alamo," and, of course, "El Paso" and "El Paso City." This release from the TeeVee label is fine, but Columbia offers a vast array of solid discs encompassing the full spectrum of Marty Robbins hits; these easily available discs provide better sound quality, liner notes, and graphics.

Robbins at his greatest with some of his most spellbinding Western sagas. The definitive cowboy singer is in masterly form as he scores with many of his epic gunfighter and trail ballads. All the classics are here ranging from the magnificent 'El Paso'and 'San Angelo' to the evocative 'Ballad of the Alamo.' Robbins tips his stetson to the Sons of the Pioneers by his smooth treatment of 'Cool Water' and 'Tumbling Tumble weeds.' No1 Cowboy? You ain't kidding! Robbins was for years the almost lone western singer. He was also simply great.
