This book sounds like it is being spoken out loud. No longer silent indeed. The authorial voice matches perfectly with the theme. Although it starts fairly slowly, once it gets going it is a true hero's journey, complete with trilling escapes, jaw-dropping fight scenes and plenty of monsters to overcome. The adventure really starts to roll when teenage Tammy runs away to join the carnival. But then her life descends into the nightmare of alcoholism and abusive relationships. With persistence, with help, and with faith, the author shows that even a terrible start in life as an abused child can eventually be overcome. This is a truly inspiring story. Tammy Gagnon, No Longer Silent Tammy Gagnon's No Longer Silent seeks to create awareness for victims of sexual abuse, and demonstrates that there is a way to overcome unfortunate, even devasting circumstances in order to find meaning in life. No Longer Silent is an autobiography that details the long- term consequences of child abuse and molestation. By sharing her story, Tammy Gagnon offers courage to other victims and encourages them to seek proper psychological treatment. No Longer Silent is a poignant autobiographical narrative blended with sensible educational advice. Tammy includes a discussion of the essential goals that anyone in treatment should strive to accomplish. For example, the end result of a treatment should be "acknowledgement and acceptance of the abuse, release of pent-up isolation and shame, and cognitive restructuring of distorted beliefs and stress responses." At the tender age of nine, Tammy's life was scarred by her grandfather. She states, "He would have oral sex with me and do things to me that scared the hell out of me." This resulted in an adolescent life of drug abuse, rebellion, and running away from home. Sadly, it was the only way she could find release for her anger and resentment, not to mention escape. When Tammy returned to high school, she befriended Sherry, her "partner in crime." As they go through a series of glamorized escapades, Tammy runs into several low-life individuals who try to sexually assault her. Before she knows it, Tammy finds herself in jail-far away from her days as an excellent student in school. Ultimately, No Longer Silent is an emotional read that depicts the pain and suffering that sexual abuse victims endure. Not only do they have their innocence and childhood stolen from them, but they also have their voices silenced. They are unable to speak up, and find themselves facing an uphill battle to recover some semblance of normalcy in their lives. No Longer Silent is the account of one victim's perseverance in piecing together a shattered life. Readers will be profoundly touched, as the author has poured her heart and soul into this book. Tammy Gagnon now lives with her daughter and grandson in Virgina, long since removed from her tumultuous past. No Longer Silent gives others like Tammy a belief that their lives can return to normal, and advocates psychological treatment to avoid the repression of feelings like anger and resentment. In essence, it returns to victims-long-silent voices-who have not spoken of a pain that has affected their very existence. Indeed, this is must read because it offers hope.
