One photo inside the booklet for No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems shows Kenny Chesney flexing his muscles, while another has him sporting a T-shirt bearing the sentiment, "All You Need Is Love." Both images are telling, because on this disc, Chesney fortifies his sturdy contemporary country foundation with some musical muscle by way of liberal quotes from British rock influences. The powerhouse opener "Young" pulls in stylistic references to the Rolling Stones, Bad Company, and Brooks & Dunn to amplify its rousing testimonial to the carefree tender years. Pete Townshend-style power chords and razor-edged hard-rock guitar solos à la Free's Paul Kossoff are the fiery backdrop for "Live Those Songs," an exhilarating homage to the open road and rock 'n' roll. Elsewhere, Chesney settles into an enticing folk-pop sound, most notably on "A Lot of Things Different," an intimate, self-critical rumination on the road not taken, and he exhibits some neo-traditional leanings, most effectively on "Never Gonna Feel That Way Again," which counsels both living for the moment and taking responsibility, over an evocative backdrop of pedal steel, banjo, and acoustic guitar. And the witty, engaging title track rocks solid with a Latin-tinged arrangement. Lots of styles, lots of content, lots of deep feeling -- No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems is a solid step forward by an artist determined to add a new wrinkle to his game each time out.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Kenny Chesney has a voice that'd be perfect for hard country, but he just doesn't have his heart in it. He likes the sweet melodies and smooth production that come with crossover country-pop, and while that may have been a frustration at one point, at least for those who consider pure country as the only guideline for quality in country, by his sixth album, 2002's No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, he's landed upon an effortless blend of pop and twang, something that is undeniable in its crossover intentions but rather charming all the same. Perhaps Chesney relies a bit too much on ballads and mid-tempo numbers throughout this album, but even the sprightlier numbers here -- the terrific opener "Young," "Big Star" -- are not honky tonk ravers, but heartland-styled rockers that gently rock and keep the melody in the forefront. So, all of No Shoes flows smoothly, and little of it could be called pure country -- the most down-home thing about the entire enterprise is the rounded twang in his voice -- but as a mature, even-handed country-pop album, it doesn't get much better than this in 2002, since it's melodic, well produced, strong on solid material, and most of all, very well sung. It's one of the highlights in his catalog.

''No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems'' is Chesney's first studio album since ''Everywhere We Go'' came out in 1999. This album is his best vocal performance to date. You can tell by the songs he chose that his career as well as he has matured. He chose to cut very real very personal songs such as ''I Remember'' You can truly feel Kenny in this song. He also covered an old Springsteen song ''One Step Up'' about love and it falling apart. Chesney definitely does the song justice. He penned two songs on this album including ''I Can't Go There'' (which includes a short part by his buddy Tim McGraw) and ''Dreams''. And as Chesney says, ''Not every lyric has to change the world'' so he has a couple upbeat songs on the album like his first single, ''Young'' a song about rekindling your youth; ''Live Those Songs'' and the Buffett-like title track. There are nothing but great songs on this album. Chesney once again does not disappoint. This album debuted at #1 on the Pop Charts and if his tour keeps going as well as it is then don't be surprised if you hear ''Kenny Chesney'' called out for Entertainer of the Year at this years CMA's. Way to go Kenny!!!

This CD is the best thing that I have ever heard out of Kenny. He has done a wonderful job on all of his music and I hope he keeps up the great work. Young and Live Those Songs are the best for cruisin' with your friends and then there are the wind-down, slow songs when you are just out driving by yourself.

I am very sorry to say that for the first time every there are songs on a Kenny Chesney album that I dislike so much I skip over them when listening to the cd. I have been a huge fan of Kenny's music for a long time and at one time I was rather good friends with him. That is why I am so sad that he has put out an album with as many flaws as this one. Kenny, you are a wonderful singer and a amazing guy, please just be yourself and stop tring to be someone eles. Kenny has more than enough talent to be a mega star in country music. Thats why it makes me so sad to see him ''sell-out'' to industry.

Loved the song "Lot of Things Different" I'm old enough to understand that; someday you will be too!

This is the best cd that Kenny has released. It has a song for everything. A song if you are in love or a song if you just got dumped. There is something for everyone. Track 3 is the best.

.... to listen to, and he has a good handle on how to interpret a song, but the rather bland material he works with on No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems doesn't do much to seperate him from the rest of Nashville's formula singers. Thankfully, he has Tim McGraw's star to give him some shine to work with. ''Never Gonna Feel That Way Again'' and ''The Good Stuff'' stand out on an album mostly spent trying to repeat what's already been done by Chesney on LP's past.

Kenny Chesney's new album ''No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems'' displays Kenny's great vocal ability and definitely gives fans what they want. As a possible contender for debuting at #1 on both the country and pop album charts, this album presents a variety of heart-felt and emotional songs that even some non-country fans would enjoy. It shows once again that Kenny Chesney is one of country's greatest artists. This album is definitely recomended.

This album is ALMOST everything I expected from Kenny Chesney. Even though I gave it 5 very big stars...I was in a little hopes that he would have added somemore ''faster'' type of songs. But when all is ''heard'' and done its really a great cd. It has such a huge amount of feeling in it... and that really means more then any type of tempo of a song. Its AWESOME!!!

Kenny's singing talent really comes out in this album. From the song ''Young'' to ''Live Those Songs''. It really hits your heart with ''A Lot of Things Different''. I went and seen him in Huntington, WV in February and the concert was great so I going to see him in June at Columbus, OH. Really good job Kenny everyone of these songs are #1 to me. If you haven't bought it yet what are you waiting on. Go out and get it, you won't regrete it.

Kenny's latest effort definitely shows how much he has grown as an artist. This album is packed with emotion. It has a good balance of feel good songs, and pull at your heart songs. I was blown away by the bonus track- a major tear jerker! Kenny and crew have done it again. This album is all that and then some!!

This is a great Cd. Kenny sings these songs just wonderful. He even did a good version of Bruce Springsteen's ''One Step Up''. If you are a Kenny Chesney fan you will just love this CD. I think it may be one of his best. Especially since he just won a award for his song ''Young'' which is the first song on the album. Even the caribbean version song which is the title of the album ''No Shoes, No shirt, No Problem'' is a great song. From start to finish I had no complaints on this song. I would give this 10 stars not 5 stars. I love Kenny Chesney and his music and he did a great job on this CD. It tells you just how far Kenny has come in the past years.
