"It's a sign."
Hayden Summers tugged at her heel stuck in the drainage grate outside of the Orchid Lounge. The music vibrated the walls and pulsed out into the parking lot, making her heart thump in time with the song. Apparently the universe wasn't on board with this whole one-wild-night plan. First, her car refused to start, and then she dropped her phone in a puddle in the parking lot. Okay, so she threw it into a puddle in the parking lot. To be fair, she hadn't meant for it to land in the puddle. And her ex had just texted her that he was getting married. To her cousin. As if breaking her heart into a thousand pieces hadn't been enough. He felt the need to move on to her family members now. Freaking parasite. Now her shoe was being held captive by this bitch of a drainage grate. She was starting to think the universe wanted her to be celibate forever. Overhead, a clap of thunder rumbled across the pitch-dark sky, as if to drive home the point. Oh yeah, definitely a sign.
Her assistant grunted and helped her pull on the sleek black pump. "It's not a sign. It's a shoe. A. Very. Stuck —" It jerked free, and they both fell back onto the pavement with an umph. Lilly blew a twist of blond hair out of her eyes. "Shoe."
Hayden grabbed the shoe and frowned. The heel to her Jimmy Choo was ... missing. She looked around and spotted it still stuck in the grate. Well, that was fan-freaking-tastic. They might have killed her feet, but they had also cost half of what she'd made on her last freelance job, and this was going to be her only chance to wear them for the next year. She wasn't exactly up with the fashion scene in Sudan, but she was guessing shoes like these wouldn't suffice when she was trekking across the war-torn country to get shots that would land her a coveted spot in Time magazine.
Hayden stood up, brushing her dress off, and helped Lilly to her feet. "It's okay. I have a pair of flats in your car."
Lilly laughed. "You are such a Girl Scout. I'll bet if I stepped on a rusty nail, you'd have a round of antibiotics in your purse for me. I wouldn't even have to go to the ER."
Hayden headed for Lilly's Honda and popped the trunk. So she might be a tad obsessive-compulsive. She stared into her emergency bag. Perfectly folded T-shirt and jeans. Flats. Toiletries. Aspirin and a bottle of water. A box of condoms. Okay, maybe more than a tad.
Lilly held up the box and grinned.
"What? You told me to be open-minded."
"I said be open-minded. I did not say to pack for a weekend trip to the Poconos. You've got enough rubber here to last you a month."
Hayden grabbed the box and threw it back in the bag, then slammed the trunk shut. "What if I end up going home with someone? Or staying the night?"
"You're kind of missing the point of a one-night stand." Lilly checked her hair in the side mirror while Hayden slipped on her sparkly black flats.
"I don't like to be unprepared."
"I don't think you have to worry about that. A zombie apocalypse couldn't catch you off guard."
Hayden stared up at the buzzing blue orchid hanging above the black double doors. A strange mixture of excitement and determination overwhelmed her. She'd never done anything like this. But saying the past year had been a dry spell would be an understatement. She hadn't even had a date in eleven months, let alone a good roll in the sack. And she'd be damned if Shane "the cheating bastard" Peterson would be her last sexual experience before she went off and risked her life. She wasn't stupid. The job she'd landed with Time might have been a photojournalist's wet dream — the kind Hayden had built her résumé for years to get a shot at — but it didn't come with any guarantees. People didn't always come back from a job like this. Not in one piece anyway.
So she'd made up her mind. She wasn't getting on that plane tomorrow with regrets. It was time for the universe to pull the stick out of its ass, because God knew it had taken her eleven months to get over the damage Shane had done and do the same. She'd worked her butt off for a year. A year of no social life and no man to warm her bed.
Well, unless you counted her best friend, Jace, falling asleep on her couch every Sunday night during their weekly Walking Dead date. Or in the weeks after she'd left Shane. She'd lost count of how many times Jace had crawled into bed with her and let her cry herself to sleep on his chest, his arms the only thing in the world holding her together. That so didn't count. Not when she'd been all weepy and pathetic. And definitely not when it was Jace she'd been wrapped around. He didn't see her that way, and now he never would. Not only did she lack the ability to attract men, she'd somehow managed to push Jace away, too.
"No ... no, no, no." Lilly put her hands on her hips and frowned. "I know that look. You are not bailing. If I can put up with the Antichrist tonight, you can put on your big girl panties and have one night of fun before you leave me."
Grateful for the distraction, Hayden shook her head. "Nate is not the Antichrist. If you would take the time to get to know him, you'd like him." How could two people so close to her repel each other so strongly? Putting Jace's brother and Lilly in a room together was like trying to get oil and water to mix.
Lilly snorted. "Doubtful."
"If it's too much for you, I do have wine and a new label maker at home. I'll even let you help me finish labeling the moving boxes. Going once, twice ..." Hayden grinned.
A look of pure horror crossed her friend's face. "Dear God, you are like one bad date away from collecting cats and wearing crochet sweater-vests with animals on them. Aren't you?"
"Of course not." Hayden looked up at the starless sky and thought about how much she'd miss this. The bustle and buzz of downtown Charlotte. The scent of magnolia trees laced with the breeze. Jace. "You know I'm allergic to cats. However, I can't make any promises about the sweater-vests. They do look cozy."
"Ha ha." Lilly leaned on the trunk and grinned. "Make fun now, but when you're knee-deep in sand and craving a pumpkin latte, you'll be thanking me for dragging you out of that apartment so you could have a memory to keep you warm at night."
Hayden laughed as they made their way over to the big metal doors of the club.
"Having a good night, ladies?" The bouncer's lips quirked as he perused Hayden from head to toe, clearly amused. She should never have let Lilly talk her into this dress. She tugged on the edges of the tight black fabric that disappeared mid-thigh, longing for her trusty Levi's. He held out his big hand. "IDs."
"You're not seriously going to card me, are you, Ron?"
He laughed. "Sorry, doll. I could get fired if I don't."
She dug into her bright red clutch and pulled out her wallet, then flashed him her ID at the same time that Lilly dangled hers over Hayden's shoulder. "Happy?"
He took a good look, as if he hadn't known her for three years and her best friend and his brother didn't own the bar. "I'd be even happier if you'd tell Jace I deserve a raise."
She shoved her wallet back in her purse. "If he ever decides to talk to me again, I will."
A lump swelled in her throat. Jace had pretty much shut her out the last two weeks. To be more exact, since the night she told him she was taking the job in Sudan. She thought he'd be proud of her. He'd always been her biggest cheerleader — even more so than her own parents. Whether he was reading her work over her shoulder when they met for their morning coffee or texting her while she was on location, Jace was always the one making her believe she could accomplish the impossible. But not this time. This time, he'd gotten pissed off and then disappeared, putting an impenetrable wall up between them.
"Oh, he'll talk to you all right." Lilly grabbed her arm and steered her through the doors, blowing a kiss to Ron. "In this dress, anyone with a dick and half a brain will have something to say to you."
Hayden squirmed again, pulling the fabric. If only it were a couple of inches longer. Maybe then she wouldn't feel like her vagina was on display for the entire club to see.
"Stop fidgeting," Lilly scolded, tossing her mass of thick blond curls over her shoulder.
"I can't help it. It's so short."
"That's the point."
Lilly tugged her toward the bar. Jace didn't get behind the bar much anymore, but when he did, he always drew a crowd. A squealing, bouncing, nausea-inducing crowd, just like the one in front of her.
"Looks like your boy is here," Lilly said, standing on her tiptoes, looking for a seat. How she hadn't broken her neck in those five-inch zebra-print heels was beyond Hayden's comprehension. They defied the laws of physics. "How are my boobs? Jace Jennings worthy?"
Hayden turned away and ignored the ugly burn in her chest when Lilly tugged on her bra to ensure the girls were on display. She hated when her assistant flirted with Jace. And the fact that she hated it just irritated her even more. "For God's sake, Lil, will you stop adjusting? You're on the border of nipple territory. I think they're good."
"Oh, for the love of all that's holy, they're both working tonight?" Lilly sighed. "All that hotness on display and a sea of silicone separating us. So not fair."
Hayden spotted a flash of the brothers working side by side before a group of guys slapping one another on the back blocked her view. Nate and Jace were behind the bar tonight. That didn't happen very often, and it explained all the excitement. They may have had some attractive bartenders working the club, but none of them compared to the Jennings brothers and the routine they'd spent years developing.
Right on cue, she heard Nate's voice ring out a command, and a bottle of vodka flew up above the bar. She didn't have to see to know that Jace had caught it behind his back to make his signature drink. Cheers erupted. It wouldn't be long before they had girls lined up on the bar for body shots. Hayden rolled her eyes and muttered, "Show-offs."
"Let's get a seat." Lilly leaned down and whispered in her ear, "And I know you said no frat boys, but if I were you, I'd make an exception for the blond one undressing you with his eyes over there."
Hayden nodded, feeling nervous and fluttery inside. God, was she really going to do this? Yes. But not before she got a drink in her. Or three. She pushed past a group of girls who looked young enough to have bedtimes and hopped up onto one of the sleek leather barstools. Jace was farther down the bar pouring a drink, completely unaware of her presence. His dark hair was styled into messy spikes. The deep, intricate colors of his sleeve tattoo swirled down his forearm to peek out from the navy blue Henley shirt that was pushed up to his elbows.
The way the fabric stuck to his cut, muscular frame was enough to make a girl drool. And he didn't have to take off his shirt for her to know the artwork didn't stop there. His parents' names were inked in old English just over his heart. He laughed at something a girl whispered into his ear, then slid her a drink with a lemon and moved on to the next person.
She sucked in a breath to calm the flutter of nerves that had erupted at the sight of him and arranged the unused cardboard coasters on the bar into a perfect line. One inch between each of them. No more. No less.
"Is he still pouting? I'm the one who should be upset. After you leave I'm going to have to go back to lame wedding photography, but you don't hear me bitching about it. I'm taking a more proactive approach." Lilly worked her way up onto the barstool next to Hayden, taking the same sideways stance to keep her red Spandex mini from riding up. "Like getting you laid. I'm thinking I'll get into the Guinness Book of World Records if I pull it off."
"Who's getting laid?" a familiar deep voice rumbled.
Hayden raised her chin to meet Jace's intense gaze. His eyes looked like mocha with sparks of gold. Something in those sparks caught fire, making her breath catch, and she pulled her hands away from organizing the coasters. He folded his arms across his wide chest and cleared his throat.
"Hayden," Lilly interjected. "And me if I'm properly persuaded." She winked, and Hayden kicked her shin under the bar, feeling the heat of humiliation flush her skin. Having a night of reckless abandon with a complete stranger was one thing. Jace knowing about it was another. He'd always been overprotective. There had been that kid who had pushed her off her bike in the sixth grade, the horny frat boy who tried to feel her up at a party sophomore year when she didn't want it, and a half dozen guys in between. They all had gotten an introduction to Jace's fist.
A dark look settled across his face. "Shouldn't you be packing?"
Here we go ...
"You haven't spoken to me in two weeks. Not a phone call. A text. Nothing," she fumed. "You do not get to dole out a lecture now."
He'd even skipped out on their morning coffee date at Amelie's. Amelie's for God's sake! They'd never had an argument that could keep either of them away from the magic of a twice-baked chocolate-and-almond croissant.
"If you missed me, all you had to do was say so." He raised a brow, giving her that cocky expression that he knew would piss her off. He'd been perfecting it for years. "I take it you're still leaving tomorrow?"
He knew the answer, so Hayden didn't bother to respond. If she did, it would only lead to another argument. And she didn't want to spend her potentially last moments with Jace arguing. When she didn't offer any words, he nodded, and his jaw ticked.
His expression darkened to a scowl when his gaze drifted from her face, down her throat, past the curve of her breasts, and stopped where the rest of her disappeared behind the bar. A shiver of warmth spread down her spine, around to her belly, and she took a breath to stop it from going any farther. The universe was a cruel bitch for making the hottest man in the room the one who found her as sexually appealing as a goldfish.
On the other end of the bar, an air horn blared.
"It's that time again, ladies!" Nate held a megaphone to his mouth, and the crowd started to scream. "You know the drill. I need three pretty ladies on the bar and one lucky son of a bitch who loves tequila."
Hayden started to back away, but Lilly grabbed her wrist and thrust her hand up in the air. "I've got one right here!"
Hayden's face flushed red and she jerked out of her friend's grasp. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
Lilly smiled, a challenge in her eyes. "Helping you let loose and leave boring Hayden at the door. That was the plan, wasn't it?"
Yes, it was. And she was right. Hayden needed this. It was just a body shot, for God's sake, and tonight was supposed to be about shedding her inhibitions and having fun. What was the worst that could happen? Jace wouldn't let some freak manhandle her more than necessary.
"Fine." She placed a foot on the barstool. "Help me up."
Lilly squealed as Hayden hopped up onto the bar. Jace caught her by the elbow, the look on his face wary. "What are you doing, Hayden?"
"You needed a volunteer, didn't you?" She shrugged out of his grip and lay back on the bar. "You got one."
Jace took a step closer, his hand resting in a clenched fist next to her hip. His jaw tensed as he looked her over.
"Got your guy over here, Jace!" Nate yelled.
"No," he growled. "I've got this one. He can take the other two." He grabbed the bowl of limes Nate slid over to him and plucked a bottle of tequila from under the bar.
Hayden's eyes widened, and she sat up on her elbows. One girl was already laid out at the other end of the bar with her shirt hiked up. "Wait. What are you doing?"
"A shot." He leaned close enough to whisper in her ear. "Or would you rather me beat the shit out of some poor guy for putting his mouth on you?"
Hayden gasped. She should have been pissed off — she'd never taken his caveman crap in the past, and there was no reason she should start taking it now. In fact, she should've hopped right off that bar and told him to go screw himself. Instead, all she could think about was the fact that Jace was about to put his mouth on her, even if it was only because he was being overprotective and unreasonable. He nudged her back down, his jaw clenched.

## Holy moly. The hero in this book.....Yowza, he was hot. And the heroine sweet. However, it was just too short. 51 pages (hence only 4 stars). I had no clue. If only the author could've added another 100 pages or so to develop these characters fully. They had tremendous chemistry which is a must for me in a book. Albeit short, this was one sexy read.
"Do you want me Hayden?"... "Yes," she said with bated breath. "I want you" "Then we're done talking" THE GOOD: This was one quick and sexy novella. I often find with short stories that I don't have enough time to get to know characters well enough to care what happens to them. But I really connected with Jace & Hayden. The fact that they have been friends for so long & have secretly loved each other also helped with the romantic connection between them. It created so much sexual tension in the short time we spend with them. You know how they've felt all this time, and just can't wait until they finally get together! And when they do…EXPLOSIVE!!!! "He groaned and brought his body flush against hers, pressing her into the door so that all she could feel was the heat of him, warming all the places where her too tight clothes were plastered against her body" The ending was also really super sweet I actually *awwwed* out loud! It just finished off this hot and steamy novella perfectly! THE BAD: It was too short! I wanted more Jace *wink wink* (or maybe some more Nate, hint hint Miss Day!) FINAL WORD: A hot & steamy novella definitely worth a read!!! Definitely hoping there will be a story for Nate & Lilly next! CONTENT: Sexuality: Strong / sex scenes Violence: none Language: medium / several f words Drugs & alcohol: mild eARC provided by publisher in exchange for honest review More reviews at The Reading Realm Blog
Good but only 50 pages!
This may have been short, but it was HOT! I adore the Brazen line from Entangled and every title from it has been a winner. They know their alpha males!
This was a page turner short but great,,,
Hottttt short read!!!!
This is a promising start to a new comtempory series. We have the requisite hot tattooed gentlemen but with lots of great twists. He is kind. He took care of his dying mother and his just returned from war brother. He is not a bad boy and while not a virgin by a long stretch he isn't a man ho and does not treat women like objects until he meets the one. Best of all, he puts his life on hold so the heroine can achieve her dreams. I give you, Jace, awesome hero. The heroine is smart and fun and little slow on the uptake as she had suppressed her feeling for her childhood friend way down. This is a fast good read and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I was given this book for my honest review. So, there you have it. :)
When I first started No Strings Attached I didn't know it was a novella, but dang, it's a tease of a novella that definitely packs a sexy punch! It was everything I love in a book and I wanted to just keep reading more and more about Hayden and Jace. There were a few things I loved about Hayden right off the bat. The fact that she kept fighting for a job she wanted and that she wasn't letting anything or anyone take it away from her. Plus I love her brazen (pun intended) attitude and I loved her interactions with Jace. Jace on the other hand... holy gosh on toast this fella. I loved him as soon as we meet him. His jealous and almost "big brother protector act" just stole my heart. Plus the fact that he was willing to make such a leap for Hayden... unf! Beautiful boy and perfect personality. I loved everything about this novella except that I went through it so quickly! No Strings Attached lets you fall in love with the characters right from the start, puts you through angst, kicks up the sexiness, and then steals your heart all in a short amount of pages. Couldn't have asked for more! Definitely will be looking forward to Nicolette Day's next release!!
My first thought? This is short *pouts* After page one, I knew there was no way this little novella would be enough. No Strings Attached is sexy, hot, sweet and full of romance in a little pack of 62 pages. Honestly no wasted space here. I loved Hayden from page 1. She's so passionate about her job as a photographer and wanting to go to Sudan to record it all for the world to see. She wants one night with no regrets before going away to a place she might not come back from. Jace is Hayden's best friend. He always had her by his side, even when his family wasn't and he's not happy with her decision. He also happens to be an incredibly hot, tattooed bartender. When fates locks them up in the bar's storage room, sparks fly and the temperature rises. Jace and Hayden relationship is beautiful and we get too see a bit of how it was while they were kids. Honestly I can't seem to get enough of this short novella. Nicolette Daywrites an emotional, sexy story with great characters you won't get enough.
I am not a huge fan of Novellas for several reasons. The first one being if I love the characters and their stories, I always want there to be more. Which goes right into the second reason, I always want to get closer to the characters, learning more about them. Third reason being it’s over before it seems like it even began. All of that aside, I ADORED Nicolette Day’s No Strings Attached. Most definitely 5 stars from me! I instantly loved Hayden with her sass, her affirmation of her place in life, what she is looking for, and how strong as well as self confident that she is. An all around fun girl that I wouldn’t miss a beat being friends with. And to the opposite spectrum is Jace, who radiates sexy, “come hither” looks, and carries himself with such confidence that every woman wants a piece of him. But his heart belongs to his best friend, but he can’t go there with her. What happens when these two get trapped in a storage closet for who knows how long, with no more time left before Hayden leaves to a dangerous war-torn land the next morning? These two know what they want, but must decide if they act on it. Nicolette does a wonderful job of creating their back story in such a way that makes me forget it is less than a hundred pages long while creating a full circle ending that left me speechless. I instantly passed on the awesomeness of this book to friends who read it and couldn’t help but to pass it on to others. This book is a prime example as to why I wish there was always more. Fantastic writing, Nicolette! (I received an ARC for my review and this is my hones to goodness, straight from the heart review!)
A hot and steamy encounter in a darkened room, where a passionate kiss could lead into so much more but an interruption stops everything. This is my first read by Nicolette Day and I have to say wow girl you totally know how to write a story that is passionate, hot, sexy all rolled up in one. I could not put this book down because from the moment that I met Jace I wanted to gobble him up. This is the perfect read when you are looking for something hot and steamy that you could be done before heading to bed only I will warn you is once you are done you will want for it to continue. So Hayden is ready to go for an assignment but before she goes she needs to do something especially after hearing from her ex-boyfriend that he is getting married to one of her relatives. She is not leaving knowing that her last sexual encounter with him but the worst part is that was almost one year ago. Not only that but her best friend Jace has been ignoring her but here she is at his club dressed sexy as hell. Jace has been in love with Hayden since like forever but just never knew it until now, now that she was leaving and who knew if she would return, especially now that she is single again. When she comes into his club he can’t seem to keep his eyes off her, there is something different. That is when he learns that she is planning to have a one night stand with some jerk. When her friend helps her climb on the bar for a body shot he knows he will not stand if another man touches her. So he chooses himself and he hikes up her dress, licks her inner thigh and tastes her sweet skin. There is no way in hell he will let someone touch her, no matter how upset she may get. No Strings Attached is an excellent read and very well written. Hayden seemed a little stiff at first but guess what she actually went through meeting someone not knowing what she was getting herself into. Now Jace is your alpha male with a great body with a sleeve tattoo that make you want to run your tongue on it. I don’t know what it is about a man that is inked up but they are sexy a hell. I love Ms. Day’s writing style and love how she was able to connect these two friends and convert them into lovers. I would love to see another book on them to see what happens in their relationship but I also want to know more about Jace’s brother, Nate. The little bit that I read about Nate and his story I was intrigued. This book kept me captivated and reading it non stop but I will say you will need something to cool you off. I totally recommend this story to any readers that want a short read full of passion and romance.
The characters in No Strings Attached were great. Jace was an awesome character. I loved his back story and found myself connecting with him. Hayden, on the other hand, felt some what stiff to me. She's a great character and I enjoyed reading her story but I just didn't connect with her the way I did with Jace. It could have been that she was acting completely out of the ordinary for herself, aka deciding to have a one night stand with a stranger, but something was just off to me. I'd love to revisit the characters, perhaps in a longer story, and get to know them better. I'm also interested in Lilly and Nate's story (Do I smell a second book, maybe?). I'm definitely a sucker for military men. Overall, No Strings Attached is a fast, fun and easy read. It's the perfect friends-to-lovers story for anyone and everyone. Honest review given in exchange for an ARC given by the publisher.
Hayden is your ambitious woman with a decision that her long time Best Friend isn't happy with. Jace has been avoiding Hayden not wanting to face her. She is concerned because she knows Jace is upset and is afraid that their friendship is ruined. Jace has had his fair share of heartache and problems along the way. Jace had to grow up fast at a young age. Both have feelings for the other that have been there for a long time but they are too afraid to confess as that may ruin everything between them. I am not usually a fast reader but after I started it I couldn't stop. This is a great read! It's short but has so much packed into it. Apprehension, Love, friendship, HOT SEX, HOT Guy and some humor. What more could you ask for?
WOW! What can I say about No Strings Attached by Nicolette Day. Seriously, this was an amazing novella. I found myself needing to finish it before I did anything else. Thank goodness, it happens to be a quick read. From the get go Ms. Day had me captivated with Hayden Summers and Jace Jennings. I really didn't want there story to end. First off, talk about heat. These two happen to be friends forever and they just seem to have bad timing. Each of them has more than "friend" feeling, but afraid to admit. Talk about a page turner. Seriously, LOVED this novella. I absolutely LOVED the ending. Granted the ending was on the sappy side, but it was perfect. I can't wait to see more from this author. So, if you are looking for a quick hot read, I would say get yourself a copy of No Strings Attached. I'm not kidding that good. Copy provided by publisher.
No Strings Attached is the first book I've read by Nicoleyte Day and I really enjoyed it. I normally like longer books but this was perfect quick read when I don't want to stay up late. The book is about Hayden and her assistant Lilly having a last night out before Hayden leaves the country for a work trip that her bff Jaycees doesn't approve of and how their relationship handles the change. Personally I love friends to lover's stories. I really enjoyed the characters and I especially liked that it was the female going off on a dangerous path for a change. The only thing that could have made this better for me would be if it were longer. I wouldn't mind a second book on these characters showing how they handled the changes between them and the path they took. I also enjoyed the supporting characters. I cant wait to read Lilly and Nate's story next. I received and ARC copy in exchange for an honest review
This one I could NOT put down! From the very beginning I was sucked into Hayden and Jace's story. It was easy to picture Jace with all his muscles and tattoos as the badass bartender getting all the girls attention and it was just as easy to picture Hayden all work and no play feeling out of place in a bar in a scrap of black fabric trying to let loose when it so obviously went against her nature. The characters in this story felt so real. So relatable. I wanted to root for them. I was hitting myself in the forehead thinking how could you not see how perfect you two are for one another. Why don't either of you get it! This one pulled my heart strings and the ending..WOW thats all I can say. No Strings Attached packs a punch for a novella and Nicolette Day makes every page count. I think most people can relate to experiencing a friendship growing into something more and the fear and worry that goes along with that. Nicolette Day captures this perfectly in No Strings Attached. Oh and did I mention Jace has a HOT brother..maybe if we're lucky and ask really nicely we'll get a book about him...
I received this book to review from the publisher. While I do not typically read this type of book, it came at the perfect time for me since I was looking for something different to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read. Hayden is a wonderful protagonist, who is in love with her best friend, Jace, but doesn't want him to know. She is about to head out for a job in a war-torn country and decides to have a one night stand to help forget about her jerky ex-boyfriend. But little does Hayden know... Jace has feelings for her too! It is just so wonderful when two people feel the same about each other, especially when it is someone you have known since you were both teens and at one time considered each other family. The chemistry between Hayden and Jace is undeniable. Ms. Day does a wonderful job of writing and telling this story in a way that is real and believable. If you are looking for sexy, quick read then definitely check out No Strings Attached. *Reviewed by: Laura at The Little Pink Book Boutique*
A very hot and steamy read!! I loved it! I'm not normally a fan of novellas because they all seem to suffer from insta-love. I prefer longer novels that take time to develop the characters and build their relationship before they jump into bed. BUT, this one actually worked for me. Hayden and Jace were already best friends so their feelings didn't seem rushed. And who doesn't love a good friends-to-lovers story?? Hayden is a photographer and has accepted a dangerous assignment that will take her out of the country. She and her assistant go out for one last night on the town. Hoping to erase the memory of her cheating ex-boyfriend, she is determined to find a guy for a one-night stand. Jace is not happy about any of this. Not the fact that she's leaving and not the fact that she's planning to hook up with a random stranger. When Hayden and Jace accidentally find themselves trapped in the storage room of his bar, things start to heat up. Jace offers her what she's looking for... one night with no strings attached. But will one night be enough for either of them?? This novella is a fairly short read, but it has all the right elements.... sexy, tattooed bartender who is secretly in love with his best friend... smart, independent girl following her dreams which causes said bartender to finally admit his feelings... and lots of steam, passion and sex! Loved it!!!
No Strings Attached was a joy to read. Just the right amount of hot and steamy mixed with a great story. Who can resist a best-friends-to-lovers theme, especially when their back story of compassion is so much a part of their character? I recommend this as a great summer (or any season) read!
At first I did not realize that no strings attached was a novella, I was really getting in to the book, and then it was over, now normally I don't like short stories, usually I really feel left wanting more to the story and having a lot of questions that are not answered, however, this was not the case this time. No strings attached follows the story of Hayden, who is a professional photographer, and is leaving the next day for a year long assignment with Time magazine, and has decided (with the help of a friend) that she is going to make the most of her last night in town, and have her very first one night stand. She decides that she is going to go to her best friend Jace's bar and meet someone there. Well, things do not go exactly as planned for Hayden, and she is in for some major life changes that she never saw coming. This is the perfect book if you are looking for a quick (about an hour or less) fun read on the beach, or if you are a commuter on the train or something. I would give this a 4/5.
I absolutely loved this novella. Ms. Day began at just the right point in Jace and Hayden's lives, giving us enough background without bogging down the story, while setting the stage for a wonderful read. The story flowed, the characters (even the secondary characters) were well fleshed out, tastefully hot love scenes, and all ends tied up with a happily ever after. Thanks for a great read, Ms. Day! Looking forward to more.
Hayden just wanted one night of fun sex with a random stranger before she leaves the country for the job of a life time. Since the last person she had sex with was her cheating ex whose marrying her cousin and she hasn’t had sex in God only knows how long she wants one night to erase the jerk. Hayden thought the one night stand would be great and uncomplicated sex would be just that uncomplicated, but being at her best friends bar when he’s not talking to her? Complicated. Jace is pissed. After finally realizing he’s in love with his best friend, Hayden she tells him she’s going to be risking her life in some other country. Seeing her at the bar in a sexy dress is does nothing to stop the onslaught of desire he has for her. When he finds out that she’s looking for a one night stand he suggests himself for the job. Heading back to Hayden’s apartment feelings begin to boil over and both realize that they will want each other for way more than one night. No Strings Attached was freaking fabulous! I love love loved it! Hayden is a loveable, strong and passionate woman who is easily relate-able. While Hayden hides her true feelings for Jace behind passion it’s easy to see she has deep feelings for him. Jace was as Hayden describes Pantie melting hot. His deep feelings for Hayden make him sexy and swoon worthy. While No Strings Attached was short that factor didn’t take away from how well written or the amazing story line. I loved all the dialogue between the characters and just the deep embedded emotions for each other was just amazing to read about. I know I would definitely reread this book over and over again. No Strings Attached is a phenomenal story that will leave you craving more!
So this is my first foray into the world of Nicolette Day. For those that don’t know Ms Day is the minxy alter-ego of Tara Fuller whose YA release Inbetween I absolutely adored. I love her writing style so to get my hands on something a little different by her made my day and believe me, No Strings Attached does not disappoint! No Strings Attached tells the story of Hayden Summers and Jace Jennings. Hayden is out for one last night with her assistant Lily before she travels abroad to take up a job as a photographer which may put her in danger. Before she leaves though there’s one thing she’s determined to do and that is to finally wash her old boyfriend right out of her hair. Cue Jace’s bar. Jace is a childhood friend who clearly isn’t happy about her going away, and he hasn’t made a secret of it. In fact he’s as displeased about that as he is about the men leering at her in the bar that he owns. You see, Jace is a man in lurve and as we quickly learn there’s nothing he won’t do to keep Hayden all to himself, even if it means putting their friendship on the line at times. I loved this book! I devoured every page and was genuinely disappointed when I came to the end. Unlike a lot of the adult reads that are hitting the shelves at the moment there are no dark secrets that leave these two bitter and twisted and gnarled inside, no-one has the urge to beat anyone and no-one is being chased by stalkers, bitter exes or the office CEO. Instead No Strings Attached revolves around friends who become lovers and in writing this novella Day has created two really likeable characters. The story briefly delves into their childhood, following the change in their relationship as things suddenly get serious and I really liked getting to see a little of their past as it adds context to the here and now making the read all the smoother for it. Hayden and Jace are two realistic characters that have normal relationship hang-ups, who struggle with them from time to time but who both have actual real social skills! Imagine! That doesn’t mean that Day doesn’t deliver the sexy time. Far from it! The two protagonists have an amazing chemistry and their physical relationship is made more intense by the emotional ties that already exist between them. Oh, and um, body shots? Hello! There is a spark between these two right from the beginning, even when they’re too busy antagonising each other to see what’s going on under their own noses but that doesn’t mean that they’re afraid to show each other their weaknesses and that’s what makes their relationship so endearing. The result is a sexy read that pulls at the heartstrings in equal measure. I have to say if there were to be a sequel or two to this series, I wouldn’t complain. Something about Nate and Lilly perhaps? Or maybe a what happened next? I could happily read about Jace all the live long day! Both would be well received!
Oh. My. Goodness. Let me just start off by saying, perhaps refrain from reading this in public--unless you prefer swooning in public. Because sexy-as-hell Jace Jennings will have you swooning! No Strings Attached is a novella by Nicolette Day, alter ego of Tara Fuller (author of the young adult paranormal series Kissed By Death). In this short read, you’re introduced to Hayden Summers, a photographer who finally lands her dream job with Time magazine, and consequently will be flying out of the country for at least a year. She wants one last hurrah before she flies out. Enter: Jace Jennings. He’s been her best friend since forever and someone who has been there for her through everything, especially during her past year of hell. If there’s one thing I love, it’s best friends to more than just friends type relationships. And, ummm, oh my God, Jace. You will fall in love with Jace because seriously. He simply exudes all sorts of off-the-charts hotness. And he’s sweet, thoughtful and all around awesome. Plus, he watches the Walking Dead. You can’t go wrong there! Despite the fact that it’s a novella, and in between all the very well written steamy scenes, Nicolette Day manages to succinctly describe these characters so well. You catch a glimpse of the past history these two have shared (and it’s truly touching how they’ve taken care of each other) and how each has had feelings for each other while unbeknownst to the other. One of the things I love about Hayden is the fact that she’s strong, independent and pursuing her career and conversely, I love that Jace realizes this and knows that he can’t be selfish with her. If you’re looking for a fun, quick read with a lot of heat and if you want to fall in love with Jace Jennings (which you do!), check this out! Prepare for lots of smexiness!
After I finished this the only thought I had or could even come up with was something like.."What the heck did I just read?" And can I just say, that I mean that in the best way possible? Because holy crap, that may have only been 67 pages, but it was 67 delicious pages. My only complaint? I wanted it to go on and on and on and on. Couldn't they have maybe been locked in the storage room for like a week? Maybe two? Yeah I know. Blah, blah they would've died, blah, blah. You people ruin all my fun with your "reality checks"! This book followed one of my absolute favorite types of storylines. The going from friends/best friends to falling in love. And in just a few pages Nicolette did a really good job at showing us the emotional depth between Hayden and Jace without having it feel like it's just another been there done that friends to lovers sort of book. It was fresh and fun and a bit thrilling! You know, the idea of being locked in a room with a smokin' hot guy that you've been pining for since as long as you can remember. Tell me the idea of that isn't thrilling. Yep. Thought so ;) I enjoyed all of the characters, even the side ones. Jace was beyond crush worthy. I really felt for him and enjoyed the book most when it was in his POV. And the little bits we got with Nate had me really liking him as well and I'm hoping we'll get to see his story in the future. I was pretty impressed that in such a short book I was given just enough to become attached to each one of these characters and have me wanting to read more of them. This would be a perfect read for those of you who want something hot and endearing and just plain yummy, but don't have the time to sit down to a full length novel. I highly recommend it!
