K-Gr 2-The delightful characters who first enchanted readers in Hest's Un beso de buenas noches (A Kiss Goodnight, Lectorum, 2001) are back. Merging seamlessly with the close of the previous title, Sam's requisite kiss goodnight is suddenly not enough to inspire sleep. Instead, Mrs. Bear must attend to his persistent cough and contend with his refusal to swallow unsavory medicine. Each inviting, warmly hued watercolor page demonstrates the compassion of a mother for her sick son while evoking the unpleasantness of illness and cough syrup any child knows. Both in dramatic expression and dialog, Hest and Jeram realistically convey the behavior of young children. Although lacking the dramatic tension of the first book, this sequel is still an excellent selection for one-on-one reading and story time. A gorgeous addition to any library or bookstore serving this age group.
