My name is Calla Price. I'm eighteen years old, and I'm one half of a whole.

My other half-- my twin brother, my Finn-- is crazy.

I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I'm terrified he'll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me.

I'm doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I'm drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline.

Dare DuBray.

He's my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I'm afraid, where I belong, where I'm lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me.

He has the power to destroy me.

Maybe that's ok. Because I can't seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt.

Why? Because of a secret.

A secret I'm so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming.

You won't either.

All I knew about Nocte going into it was that I shouldn’t know anything about it before going into it. I stuck with that. I didn’t read any reviews, I didn’t ask any questions… I just dove in headfirst. And, oh man, did this book throw me for a loop! “I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day.” If I can suggest one thing, it’s to go into this story with as little knowledge of it as possible. It has all kinds of twists and turns and mind-mashers that will leave you, if you’re anything like me, screaming, “WHAT?!?!” more than once. It was very enjoyable, thrilling, and left me super eager to continue on with this trilogy. This is one I would definitely recommend to those that like a good physiological thriller to really mess with your head.

23745669 Sarah J. Y. C.'s review Oct 29, 15 · edit 5 of 5 stars bookshelves: book-reviews, books-i-own Read from October 23 to 29, 2015 5 CRAZY STARS!!! Nocte by Courtney Cole is the first book of the Nocte trilogy. The rest of the series is now available. OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!! THAT ENDING!!!!!!!!! Nocte by Courtney Cole is a fantastic and amazing story. It is one of the most unique and enticing stories I have ever read! Nocte is about a girl named Calla who has a twin brother, Finn, with a mental illness. All her life, she and Finn have been inseparable. There love for each other as brother and sister held no bounds. Calla has always been there for her twin, and she will do anything to help him. But when tragedy strikes, Calla and Finn struggle to keep living life to the fullest. As Calla struggles with managing her own problems as well as Finn's, she finds a ray of happiness with Dare DuBray. Only...Dare has his own secrets. And there is always that old saying that revealing the truth is always best. But sometimes, secrets are better being kept hidden. Courtney develops an amazing plot with twists and turns that will leave you wanting to know and read more. She has developed this wonderfully unique story that grabbed my attention from the first page. Nocte is unlike any other book I've read and I am SOOOOO glad I read this book. Because now I will have a serious book hangover because....THAT ENDING! I absolutely love the relationship between Calla and Finn. As brother and sister, and twins, Courtney captured the essence of their bond fantastically! You could tell how close Calla and her brother were, and how they were willing to do ANYTHING to save each other from their inner demons. And Dare DuBray! Let's just say that this fine specimen of a man will forever be on my top 20 book boyfriends!!!! He is sexy, kind, smart, loving, caring, and also badass at the same time! I think I almost fainted every time Courtney wrote a sexy Dare scene in the book...which happened to be almost all the time! But there was also a mysterious side to him that you don't figure out until the end and even then, the book leaves you at a cliff hanger that still keeps Dare's secrets hidden. The anticipation KILLED me when I read the last sentence. KILLED ME. Like, I think my heart and lungs stopped working for a good five minutes. I'll warn you right now (if you already hadn't figured it out) that the book ends in a cliffhanger. A frustratingly wonderful cliffhanger. Yeah, I know. That makes no sense. But it does at the same time. And towards the end, Courtney reveals a shocking revelation that will have you wide-eyed, jaw dropped, internally screaming, and saying"OHMERGERD" a bajillion times. TRUST ME. You want to read this book. And the next one. And the next one. Until you are done with the entire series. CUZ IT IS THAT GOOD. I highly recommend Nocte to anyone. ANYONE. It is a definite must-read. Nocte is a wonderfully beautiful story that will make you cry and smile and fall in love with the characters. I know I did. And I also neglected to do any work because I couldn't put this book down. Totally worth it though :)

The story was suspenseful and dark with characters that are damaged and haunted. This is one of those books that you need to read knowing almost nothing about the story. The less you know going in, the better. I'd read only the blurb, and that was enough to tease me into reading the book. I didn't realize this was going to be a trilogy. I'm beyond curious to see where the story goes from here. Nocte by Courtney Cole  was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

“because sometimes that’s how life is. A puzzle made up of a million pieces, and when one piece doesn’t exactly fit, it throws the rest of them off.” This book is unique...the twists and turns are devour each word trying to race ahead to figure out what is going on...and just when you think you've got don't! This is a book that you want to go into knowing absolutely NOTHING about. It is something that you have to experience word for word. The writing is engrossing, the story beautifully paced and you will be totally consumed. “fake it ‘til you make it. If you don’t feel good, pretend you do because eventually you will. It hasn’t worked yet, but I’m still holding out hope.”

“My other half-- my twin brother, my Finn-- is crazy. I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me.”  Calla & Finn were fabulously complex. I loved the twin connection and how it grounded the plot. When Dare enters, he is obviously a great addition; sexy, kind and patient. He is a great guy. I was taken by Calla and her story from the beginning. Her story was so sad and a little scary. “I would plunge to the bottom of the ocean for you. I’d comb it for shells and make you a necklace and then hang myself with it. Because if you aren’t here, I don’t want to be either.”  I loved that they lived on the cliffs in the North West. The precarious feeling of going over the edge was always in the background of the story and it spoke volumes about Calla and Finn's lives. It was the perfect imagery for this story. “I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day.”  It is almost impossible to write a review for this book because of all the twists and turns, so I am just going to tell you how it made me feel.  Confused – The story was well written and easy to follow, but I was lost in all the crazy and didn’t know which way was up. I felt like I was constantly digging only to reveal more information… and I loved it.  Captivated – This book held my attention from beginning to end. I read it in one day. I cursed anything that interrupted me and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish.  Disturbed- This is a dark read. It touches on serious and real subjects that few ever experience. Calla put the weight of the world on her shoulders. She was so young to have so much chaos in her mind. And speaking of chaos; poor Finn. It was difficult spending time in the mind of such a disturbed young person.  Endeared- Dare’s patience and kindness was a beacon of hope in the midst of the disarray. And Calla and Finn’s devotion to one another was admirable and went beyond your average twin bond. Calla’s father must be mentioned under this emotion too. He was stronger than I ever realized. As the story unfolded, I grew more and more connected to him. He was quite a guy. Relieved - When the pain finally stopped… or so I thought. When you get what you think is the big reveal, there is amazing feeling like you can finally breathe again… ish. “There is nothing quite so terrifying as the dissension of the human mind into insanity.”  There is definitely a cliffhanger, but this book was written as part of a trilogy. Hang in there and read Verum ASAP.  I give this book 5 Stars and pair it with Bushmills Malt. Sláinte!

Get ready for one hot mess of a rambling review. Seriously, I don't even know where to begin. Do I start with the storyline that was ten kinds of messed up but oh so appealing at the same time? Do I start with how the last third of the book was my favorite and had me reading like never before so I could seek out its secrets? Or maybe it was the last few pages that had me weeping uncontrollably. Yeah let’s start with all of that. This book will take you through a roller coaster of emotional turmoil. You will be chomping at the bit to find out what the author is trying to convey. You will be gripping your book and/or reading device DESPARTELY, all just to know what the hell is going on. The storyline is cryptic. The storyline was absolute madness. The storyline was one that will have me waiting on pins and needles for the next installment. I will say that the first two-thirds of the book was a bit...well, not slow, but not action worthy. Until I get to the last third of the book and realize it was. All along it had been and I just failed to see it for what it was. Staring me in the dang face. That last third of the book had me flabbergasted and amazed all at once. The last third of this book had me thinking that Cole is a literary genius and I was just a lowly reader who had finally seen the light! I was floored with what flows through that noggin of hers and spills out on paper. I may be coming off a bit drama'ish...but I am not one for psychological reads. And this one did a number on me. So yeah, I think Cole is a super genius for getting everything out like she did and ending like she did. Did I mention I cannot wait for book 2 yet? The last few pages had me sobbing like I have never sobbed before. Sure if may be the pregnancy hormones that are streaming through me right now. Or maybe it was the relationship that Calla shared with her twin brother, Finn. I have a twin brother and only wished we had a fraction of the relationship they had. But those last few pages, when all is revealed, I cried like I have never cried before with a book. Sobbing! My heart and my soul were hurting beyond normal feelings I have ever felt with a book. I am not sure I can wait until February for VERUM. Everything within me is aching to know. To know what the hell that ending was about...what Calla was going to ask...what the flippity what is going on! I most definitely recommend this read to you and hope you will give it a go. I can almost swear to it that you will love it. 5 Whoa the Whoa-What Just Happened-Give Me More Stars!

This book was recommended to me by an amazing book blogger that I religiously follow and I picked it up, even with some hesitation. While the overview was good, I didn't think it would grab me. Boy, was I wrong! This book got it's claws into me and didn't let go! It was an absolutely amazing, emotional, and heartbreaking read! The author did an amazing job and I am now anxiously awaiting the second book!

You feel like you're right there with Calla, experiencing everything thing she's going through. This book is beyond AMAZING, & I wish I could give it 10 stars! I can't really tell about the book because it will ruin your reading experience. When you finish it, you'll understand. A must read!

Words cannot express just how freaking amazing this book was. A dazzling masterpiece that held me captive and kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first page, it was spectacular in every way. Courtney Cole has created a twisted web that will keep you guessing the entire time – and when you finally reach the pivotal moment that will change everything you thought you knew, you will be stunned. And then, that ending!!! I now believe that Courtney Cole loves torturing her readers, because leaving off where this book did was wrong on so many levels but also so very brilliant, and I need the second book now! My emotions were in complete turmoil as I read this book. My stomach was in knots, I felt jittery and by the end I was totally shattered. I felt everything this book threw at me as if I were walking the fine line Calla walked every day. I felt lost, alone, happy, sad, scared and so much more. When this book was announced, Courtney Cole said that she had once considered not writing this story. Thank goodness she did. This dark and gritty suspenseful read was stunning and deserved to have been brought to life. So thank you Courtney!

Bartender Rating: Chaser This and more reviews at The Book Beautiful cover, enticing synopsis and such depth to the plot. There is no doubt that Nocte is a romantic mystery. Courtney Cole takes us to a twisted, beautiful landscape scarred by horrific tragedies. Inflicted or happenstance, Calla lives with her world crumbling around her, like the cliffs that her family's funeral home rests on. Years of watching bodies come and go wears on a person. I've seen it all... accident victims, elderly people, still-births, kids. The kids are the hardest, but eventually it's all hard. Death isn't something that anyone wants to think about, and no one wants to be surrounded by it all of the time. My father might've chosen his profession, but I certainly didn't. Nocte. Cole, Courtney. 2014. ARC provided by author. Nocte's characters are completely surrounded by death. Death as a career, death in the family, suicide to end a life of mental instability. It all takes place around the town's funeral home located atop a mountain, on the coast of Oregon. Calla tries to maintain normalcy but blames herself for the family's loss. Calla's life slows to a crawl and much of her focus is on her twin, Finn. Finn has battled Schizoaffective Disorder since he was young and only Calla can bring him peace from the voices in his head. "You say we like it's your problem, Cal. I guess that's your problem. You've always assumed my issues like they're your own. They're not. We're different in that way. You're healthy, Cal. Act like it. It's time. Nocte. Cole, Courtney. 2014. ARC provided by author. Calla receives a break from mourning when she meets Dare. He takes his time getting to know her, and every meeting he helps her forget the suffering that weighs her down. Dare is fast, fun and everything Calla wants in a man. The feelings she has for him are immediate and she is certain of her love for him; like he was made for her. However, Dare keeps Calla at arms-length and refuses to go any faster with their relationship and begs her to take care of herself first before they can be together. "I wake up in the night wanting you. I dream about you. But right now, you're tied up in a lot of painful, hard things. I need to make sure that you're not just drawn to me because you're confused. I want to make sure that you really want me. I'm willing to be patient and find out. So my question is, can you be patient and wait, too?" Nocte. Cole, Courtney. 2014. ARC provided by author. So why three stars? This book is getting rave reviews and I wrote up my review before finding out what everyone else thought. I loved the concept and the character development, but I am such a stickler for repetitiveness. Many phrases/adjectives were used again and again. There were also a few misspellings throughout. However, since I read the ARC, these errors may have been corrected. Dead people don't look like they're sleeping, as everyone likes to say. They look dead, because they are. Poor things. I refuse to gawk at them. Death strips a person of dignity, but I don't have to be the one holding the filet knife. Nocte. Cole, Courtney. 2014. ARC provided by author. And, even though the revelation of the mystery was obvious to me, it was still an entertaining read. Long, but entertaining. There is a lot of description, which you sort of want to run through so you can get to the other side of the mystery, but it does create a fascinating setting in your mind. The only thing worse than drowning in grief is sharing a lifeboat with other drowning people. Nocte. Cole, Courtney. 2014. ARC provided by author. It's a cliffhanger. Well, this book answers one mystery while presenting a new mystery at the end. A mystery with a cliffhanger is tough because you get mad and you just want to know how it ends for the main character. However, Cole has allowed fans to help vote on Calla's fate on her website (do NOT click here until you're read Nocte). I was satisfied understanding the initial mystery and now I really want to find out more. I want to know what happens with Calla and Dare and if it's just as crazy as the Nocte mystery. There are three books planned, NOCTE, VERUM and LUX.
