I recently received this as a gift, and spent two or three hours just looking at it and skimming it over. It's an enjoyable book with excellent photos, maps, and commentary on modern railroad yards. Another nice feature, is how the author makes mention of the best vantage points for trainwatching at most of the yards covered. A feature the vacationing railfan will greatly appreciate. However, it also tries to cover so much material that many of the operations are only briefly mentioned. Some are even all together omitted, such as the KCS or any of the Mexican railways. Also, with the ever-changing railroad scene in North America, I can see this book becoming out of date, rather fast. A fact that the author even mentions himself. In any case, this is a refreshing change from the seas of 'the history of the (insert name here) railroad' books that flood the bookstore shelves.
