Lila and Tom Byron are married and off to Virginia, where Tom has accepted the headmaster's position at Laurel Hill Academy. The mystery surrounding Lila's family tree that began when she inherited her mother's jewelry deepens when she discovers a painting of a woman who looks eerily similar to her. The pair decide to research the unknown woman and determine if her identity can shed some light on Lila's heritage, but the investigation takes a deadly turn when Lila and her husband's colleague are shot by the man's jealous wife.

The wife disappears with Lila's birthright, the jewelry willed to her by her increasingly enigmatic mother. Lila survives the attack, and she and Tom must follow the trail they started on to uncover the truth about Lila's family as well as recover her stolen property.

However, every lead seems to turn into a dead end. The murderous wife is located, but the jewelry is not with her. The pair's best hope for answers is destroyed by a hurricane. But the search for answers goes on.

Can they finally solve the mystery with the help of an unexpected ally? New and exciting adventures follow on the heels of every discovery.
