Overview

Not Yet, Rose by Susanna Leonard Hill, Nicole Rutten

As Rose anxiously awaits the birth of the family’s new baby, she isn’t sure what to expect about her new role as big sister. She isn’t sure whether she wants a baby brother or a baby sister; actually she isn’t sure she wants a new baby at all! But when her new little brother actually arrives, suddenly everything seems just right. / Susanna Leonard Hill’s text perfectly captures the excitement and apprehension of children anticipating the arrival of a new baby, and Nicole Rutten’s sweet hamster characters make this an ideal story for siblings-to-be.

While the story of Rose's anticipation surrounding the impending arrival of a sibling is particularly relevant for children in a like situation, it is a special and worthwhile read for all. The story is sweet and honest. The illustrations are a perfect match. Not Yet, Rose is certain to become a favorite.

I am expecting my second child and was looking for a picture book to share with my 2 1/2 year old daughter that might give her some idea of what to expect. What a pleasure it was to find Not Yet, Rose! Not only does the story help children understand what babies are like, but author Susanna Leonard Hill does a beautiful job of exploring Rose's often contradictory (and very true to life!) emotions as she tries to imagine what it will be like to be a big sister. Children will find the story engaging and Nicole Rutten's beautiful illustrations a joy to explore, and parents will appreciate the gentle wisdom of Rose's parents and the many opportunities for discussion with their little ones that the story opens doors to. My daughter asks for this story over and over, which is always a great recommendation, and having discovered this wonderful book I plan to give it as a gift to everyone I know who is expecting their second child!

Not Yet, Rose beautifully captures the imaginings of an expectant big sister, the excited anticipation coupled with the ambivalence of welcoming a baby sibling. It is a story filled with gentle humor that children will clamor to hear again and again, and parents will be pleased to accommodate. Not Yet, Rose is the perfect choice for families adding a precious little one because it will facilitate an honest discussion about the realities of having a new infant in the home-- and the story will touch the heart.
