Overview

Nothing in Reserve invites the reader to an intimate glimpse of one retread soldier's journey to Iraq and back. True stories set in wartime, these are not war stories.

Jack Lewis offers an unexpectedly vulnerable glimpse into one of the timeless tests men have faced: going to war, and returning home. While the veteran will find honesty and truth within, this book is accessible to the uninitiated as well.

Early stories give an authentic but often funny glimpse of military life, building to a crisis of personality all too common among returning soldiers. Exploring the universal human question of how we move through our lives, acknowledging mortality and pain without becoming lost within it, Jack shares with us his own journey toward elusive redemption.

About the Author

From a quiet suburb of Seattle, Jack Lewis cheerfully exasperates people all over the world. Since he won’t be well-known until he’s dead, he advises that you buy a lovely first edition of this book right now and promises to autograph it the next time he sees you in a cheap attempt at posterity.

A veteran of OIF III and Cold War service in Korea, Lewis never advanced beyond the grade of staff sergeant, but has done other jobs along the way including lineman, busboy, furniture builder, reporter, circuit designer, hotel manager and hardware clerk. With a BA from Washington State University and an MFA from the University of Southern California, what else was he going to do? Actually, this is a serious question. If you have a legitimate job offer, the author would like to hear from you pronto. Writing books is harder than he thought it would be.

Occasional windfalls of fortune have included placement in Andrew Carroll’s anthology Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience, nomination for a Pushcart prize and award of the D.B Houston Journalism prize.

Lewis lives in a suburb of Seattle, Washington with his wife, a variable population of barely manageable children and a couple of remarkably well-behaved dogs. He enjoys a decent cigar now and then, has noticed that his taste in Scotch improves rapidly when you're buying... and thanks you for buying this book.
