Ottmar Liebert's groundbreaking NOUVEAU FLAMENCO is so popular that it spent ten years on the Billboard charts. This tenth-anniversary special edition rallies resources that weren't available a decade ago, so instead of showing timeworn wrinkles, NOUVEAU FLAMENCO has been given a digital facelift. A little polishing, a new track order, and several new tunes throw the album into more romantic territory. A side-by-side comparison of old and new on the megahits "Barcelona Nights" and "2 the Night" reveals a more brittle sound on the originals; "Santa Fe" is sweeter and fuller-sounding now. But while the remixes are mellower, several new tracks add pure flamenco fire. Liebert's passionate phrasing on "Lonely Hours" evokes images of two entwined dancers, stereophonic palmas set the stage for the suspenseful "Morning Sky," and synth strings help create a languid mood on "Sudden Shadows." Liebert ends the album with "Under Blue Moon," a bluesy but bristling piece. Who knows? NOUVEAU FLAMENCO 2000 could start a whole new trend.
