This book is excellent.  It manages to keep a lighter tone without letting the tone affect the quality of the writing or events.  Ed McGuiness's art is beautiful.  It is a new narrative.  Fans of Rider may not be as welcoming due to the fact that it almost ignores Richard's stint as Nova.  This book is very new reader friendly though there are two more obscure characters and the Watcher.  I found the protagonist Sam to be very believable and greatly enjoyed watching him and his relationships with the rest of the cast, especially Uatu.  The book does hinge on the relationship between Sam and his father which may be a negative point to some.

I was very underwhelmed with the whole of the book. I understand trying to build the back story it just seemed to lack punch. Could be carry over from having enjoyed Richard as the original Nova.

If you're looking for quality reading...this isn't the book for you. While McGuiness is at the top of his game with this book, Loeb and this "idiot" Nova are, at their best, a horrific mess. If your kid is a fan of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon and wants to read a Nova story, do the kid a favor and get them a Nova book by Abnett and Lanning that will do the character justice. If you want to read a Nova story, the same advice follows.
