Description: This is an updated edition of a primer on nutrition and nurses' role in disseminating nutrition information to patients.
Purpose: The purpose is to concentrate on the nutrition skills applicable to nursing practice. Since so many books focus on the needs of nutrition professionals, this one is a refreshing addition that meets the needs of the largest group of healthcare professionals who have constant access to patients, both inpatient or outpatient.
Audience: The book is written primarily for nursing students, but the authors also suggest that it can be used by public health and health science majors. It also would be an excellent reference for nurses and nurse practitioners.
Features: The two chapters in the book's first part cover wellness, nutrition, and the nursing role. The six chapters in part II cover nutrients, food, and health. The two chapters in part III cover health promotion through nutrition and nursing practice. The final part, with 10 chapters, focuses on nutrition therapy in a variety of health conditions, including diabetes, metabolic stress, and kidney disease. The authors further explain that the book can be divided into two semesters, by focusing on the first three parts during the first semester and leaving part IV for the second semester. Access to the Evolve website is included with the book, enhancing the learning experience with online case studies, knowledge questions, and critical thinking clinical applications. Each chapter contains learning objectives, personal perspective textboxes, cultural consideration textboxes, teaching tools, special considerations, and nursing approach case studies. The teaching tools in the chapter on diabetes include a sample of a carbohydrate counting handout from the Diabetes Care and Education practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (available free at www.dce.org) as well as an interdisciplinary nutrition care plan from Nutrition 411 (also available for free at www.nutrition411.com). Chapters are colorful and easy to read with multiple tables and figures. They are very practical and include key information nurses need regarding nutrition.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for nursing students and nursing professionals who are looking for an up-to-date reference on nutrition and the role of the nurse. This update is much needed to keep up with the many changes in the field of nutrition.
