Overview

O Sole Mio

One of the pleasant surprises of Luciano Pavarotti's career is that this tenor from Northern Italy has become such a universally popular singer of Neapolitan songs. Many great tenors of the past, such as Enrico Caruso and Beniamino Gigli, were born in the South, but Pavarotti had to learn the style. He has mastered it completely, as this disc so appealingly proves. There may be more violently emotional versions of "O sole mio" than Pavarotti's, but none more sunny. "Torna a Surriento" has all the glamor of a technicolor travelogue, and "Funiculì Funiculà" will have every listener singing along. Veteran maestro Anton Guadagno has a firm control of this repertory, which flatters the sensuous appeal of Pavarotti's voice.
