Description: This is a comprehensive book on the care of the most critically ill patients that obstetricians will encounter. It is straightforward, in depth, and contains adequate flow charts to improve ease of reading.
Purpose: The book covers clinical scenarios that directly involve obstetric patients in the ICU. The objective is to provide easy to understand information to care for these severely ill patients.
Audience: The book would is appropriate for residents in obstetrics and critical care, as well as obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine physicians. The authors are the foremost authorities in this area.
Features: The first striking feature is the accessibility of the information. For instance, chapter one covers basic hemodynamics and makes the complicated (Swan-Ganz readings) easy to understand. The integration of pictures with text is seamless and the ratio of picture to text is subtly in favor of the pictures. Because this book can also serve as a reference, it is vital to get information as quickly as possible. A great example where this is done well is Table 1-7 that incorporates the CARPREG scoring system and provides quick information for risk calculation. Also done well is chapter 8 on cardiac disease. Rarer conditions are given equal weight, such as pheochromocytoma. There is even a corresponding table on the management of this condition. A new addition is the chapter on sickle cell crisis during pregnancy. This chapter is excellent and discusses acute chest syndrome but I would have liked a more in-depth discussion of this particular facet of the disorder and what — if any — differences in treatment are recommended.
Assessment: This is an excellent book and a must-have for maternal-fetal medicine physicians.
